Schedule : Part-Time / Casual (Estimated 60 hours per month)

Tuesdays & Thursdays: 6:00am - 6:00pm (end-time may be earlier depending on operative schedule)

Job Overview : Seeking motivated, reliable, and hardworking individuals to contribute to a tradition of excellence at a State-licensed and AAAASF certified ambulatory surgery facility in Pittsburgh, PA. The Shadyside Surgi-Center is among the longest continuously running, licensed ambulatory surgery facilities in Western Pennsylvania with a special focus of plastic surgery, hand surgery, reconstructive surgery, and general surgery.

A part-time, perioperative nurse with previous experience in ambulatory surgery care is sought. This individual will be comfortable assuming pre- and post-anesthesia recovery nursing responsibilities. This job involves broad exposure to ALL aspects of ambulatory surgery nursing care. Pennsylvania Nursing License, ACLS certification, and Malpractice Insurance are required. Previous perioperative care experience is required. Unwavering reliability and work attendance record is an absolute requirement. Independent, motivated work ethic is required. This individual should strive at all times to contribute to the maximization of quality, safety, and convenience for all patients throughout their perioperative care.

Job Duties :
Direct perioperative patient care:

  • Preoperative patient intake and assessment.
  • Preoperative medication administration and peripheral intravenous line placement.
  • Transfer patients safely to and from the operating room, changing room, preoperative room, and perioperative care areas.
  • Surgical site preparation, including operative washing, hair trimming, and sterile preparations.
  • Safe patient positing, padding, and securement.
  • Placement of urinary catheters, sequential compression devices, warming blankets, Tourniquets when indicated.
  • Maintenance and performance of safe and accurate surgical counts.
  • Processing, handling, and labeling of tissue specimens, implants, medical devices, disposable medical equipment, and durable medical goods.
  • Applications of dressings, garments, and splints.
  • Perform accurate and safe transfer of care to recovery room.
  • Patient monitoring, treatment, and evaluation.
  • Direct post-anesthesia care of monitored patients.
  • Maintenance of accurate and timely narcotic counts.
  • Timely and accurate patient charting.
  • Patient and family education, training, and instruction.
  • Patient outreach, perioperative telephone encounters, and virtual/remote assessment.
  • Completion of perioperative patient-care documentation and surgical facility documentation in a timely and comprehensive manner, including intraoperative record and time-keeping, charting, chart review, and chart filing.

Inventory and Instrument maintenance:

  • Inspecting surgical/recovery room equipment, crash carts, and medications and coordinating in equipment service or inspection where indicated.
  • Accurate supply ordering and inventory maintenance, minimizing waste and inefficiencies at all times.
  • Stock and inventory review, monitoring for product expiration.
  • Medication inventory review, safe securement, logging, and monitoring for product expiration.

Facility maintenance:

  • Review, maintenance, and upkeep of inspection logs and environmental logs.
  • Participate in routine fire safety and maintenance.
  • Participation in routine licensure inspections.
  • Inspecting essential facility equipment and coordinating in equipment service or inspection where indicated.

Team support

  • Covering the duties of scrub technician or circulating room nurse in order to support fellow team members when scheduling demands arise.
  • Participate in routine quality and team meetings and debriefings.
  • Maintaining a respectful and patient-focused work environment.

Contributing at all times to safety, quality, and convenience in patient care.

Requirements & Qualifications:

  • Active RN license.
  • Valid ACLS certification (or plan for certification)
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance.
  • Continuous adherence to HIPAA standards.
  • Reliability and ability to maintain an unwavering commitment to duty schedules.
  • Previous perioperative nursing care experience is preferred.
