JOB SUMMARY:

The Exhibitions and Special Projects Technician provides hands-on support for the School of Art student shows and public exhibitions. The position works closely with the Art Office and relevant staff to ensure students and faculty are supported, safety guidelines are met for all installations, and exhibition spaces are maintained to a professional standard.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical guidance and hands-on support for student shows.
o Planning: provide technical advice, available to meet and advise students, collaborate with relevant staff on trouble-shooting.
o Installation/de-installation: perform genie lift installs and other complicated installations requiring safety oversight, assist transporting large/heavy/delicate works, install/remove AV mounts to ensure safe handling of equipment, conduct rounds to verify spaces have been returned to appropriate condition between shows.
o General support: work collaboratively with relevant staff to support day-to-day operations, such as: storage of artworks and exhibition furniture, communicate relevant information to students and faculty, and generally contribute to a productive work environment.
o Assist in training and overseeing student workers as needed.
  • Ensure maintenance of and professional standard for all exhibition spaces.
o Perform weekly rounds of galleries, lobbies, and adjacent spaces (hallways, foyers) to ensure areas are clear, orderly and free from damage. This includes during the exhibition cycles as well as midterm and final critiques.
o Patch, paint and repair spaces as needed. Report any significant damage, including leaks or electrical issues to Facilities.
o Work collaboratively with the relevant faculty, staff and administration to understand and support curricular goals as they relate to exhibitions. This includes providing recommendations on updates to facilities, equipment/tool purchasing, maintenance and repair of exhibition furniture.
  • Ensure health and safety guidelines are met and maintained as related to exhibitions spaces and installations.
o Act as a point person to Facilities and Security to address any issues related to egress or fire code.
o Maintain active and open communication with the Art Office to resolve any issues.
o Oversee special events and receptions as needed.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES AS NEEDED:

  • Provide technical assistance and advice on related special projects, such as exhibitions curated through the Dean’s Office and the Lubalin Center for Design. This includes installing and de-installing artworks, packing artworks, and acting as a liaison to Facilities and Security on relevant matters.
  • Act as a point person to other members of the college seeking relevant technical advice on installations and exhibitions.
  • Assist with documenting exhibitions.

SKILLS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong knowledge of different artistic media, exhibition production techniques, and demonstrated ability to work with tools and equipment for installations.
  • Excellent time management skills with strong ability and aptitude for hands-on problem-solving and has a pro-active approach to providing support in the work environment.
  • Needs to be flexible and willing to learn and adapt to the existing educational environment and its needs and schedule.
  • Excellent communication and written skills, capacity to work both independently and collectively, collegial and comfortable working in a busy environment.
  • Strong ability to work with a diverse community of students, staff, and faculty with a high degree of cultural competency.
  • Experience in either a professional or educational setting

EDUCATION:

  • BA/BFA in visual arts or related field preferred

Pay rate: $24.76 per hour
