DC, VA & MD - Legal Translators. Editors and Transcribers in a Variety of Languages - U.S. Citizens
GLS, a woman-owned small business headquartered in the Washington DC metropolitan region, is currently seeking talented freelance translators, editors, and transcribers to translate, edit and/or transcribe legal documents between English and one or more of the following languages:
Spanish, French, Portuguese (Brazilian, European), German, Russian, Polish, Chinese (Mandarin/Traditional/Simplified), Japanese, Arabic, and other Western/Eastern European, Middle Eastern, Asian (South/East), and African languages
Location: On-Site (DC, VA & MD area and remote)
Status: Contractor, Part-Time
Job Duties:
1) Provide accurate translation of documents and/or transcription of audio files involving law enforcement and legal subject matter from foreign languages into English or vice versa.
2) Edit audio transcriptions that include slang and idioms.
3) Edit legal documents, such as affidavits, depositions, etc., while demonstrating a strong command of legal terminology in both English and the target language.
4) Excellent written communication skills in English and the target foreign language, with Advanced proficiency (reading/speaking/listening, writing) level 3-plus in English and the foreign target language, as assessed by the International Language Roundtable (ILR) scale.
5) Translate and/or transcribe in accordance with government client's style guides and quality standards.
6) Use domain-specific terminology.
7) Review and certify the quality of other translators' work, as needed.
8) Highly proficient in MS Office, with the ability to mirror source document format in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
9) Familiar with the use of CAT tools, such as Trados Studio
10) Abide by a code of ethics when performing transcription and translation work.
Minimum Qualifications:
1) U.S. Citizen residing in the DC, VA or MD area in the United States
2) Holds active public trust or higher security clearance or is willing to undergo a US government background check to obtain a public trust clearance at a moderate level.
3) Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
4) At least 3 years' experience in translating and/or editing between English and a foreign language.
5) At least 3 years' experience performing audio transcription with the ability to use software to enhance sound and equipment to aid in transcription.
6) Familiar with legal terminology in both English and the target foreign language(s).
7) Proficient in Microsoft Office
8) Translators and editors must be proficient using CAT tools, such as SDL Trados
Preferred Qualifications:
1) Law degree, paralegal certificate, or documented legal translation or transcription experience
2) Experience with editing documents of audio transcriptions
3) Active Public Trust or higher security clearance
4) ATA, NAJIT or other relevant professional certification
