Cantigny Gardens:

Created by renowned landscape architect Franz Lipp, the twenty-nine acres of formal gardens at Cantigny are a horticultural masterpiece. Cantigny possesses one of the largest display gardens in the Midwest with more than 160,000 annuals, perennials, ground covers and flowering shrubs and trees. Cantigny’s gardens are a source of education, recreation, and inspiration to thousands of visitors annually. 

Principal Function:

Responsibilities will include the cultural maintenance of trees and shrubs, hiking trails, woodland paths, and resource management of woodlands and prairies located in the park and Golf course to standards set forth by the Head Forester. This will also include hazard risk assessment and plant health care scouting.

Responsibilities:

· Utilizes safe and proper work techniques when performing tasks. Utilizes proper PPE when performing tasks.

· Conducts woodland and prairie invasive species management.

· Performs Plant Health Care and Hazard risk assessment scouting.

· Follows ANSI Z1.33 safety standards when operating equipment, such as chipper, chain saw stumper, woods mower, log splitter, etc. Maintains proper condition of Arborists tools.

· Has thorough knowledge of ANSI A300 standards for pruning. Assists in proper and timely pruning.

· Assist with maintenance of the tree and shrub planting throughout the Gardens and Golf Course including plant removal, installation of new plant material, watering, weeding, trimming, shearing and mulching of plants

· Must be trained and understand the most proper and safe pruning methods set by ANSI A300

· Must be trained and understand the most proper and correct methods and procedures of safety with equipment as set by ANSI Z133.1-2006

· Operates small motorized equipment such as hedge shears and non-motorized arborist equipment including hand tools, shears, pole saws and loppers.

· Operates large motorized equipment including chipper, tractors, carts, wood splitter, etc.

· Maintains arborist equipment, including cleaning and sharpening.

· Provides for personal safety in the workplace by attending and completing all required safety training. Knowing and following existing safety rules including the applicable use of personal protection equipment, the proper operation of tools/machinery and proper handling of hazardous materials, and reporting any unsafe conditions to respective supervisor. 

· Reports any problems to the Forestry Crew Supervisor or Forester

· Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

 · Physical Fitness: Has appropriate strength, agility, and endurance to perform duties in all kinds of weather.

· Able to lift 50 lbs. to shoulder height. 

· Ability and willingness to climb trees to 25 ft to perform work.

· Must be safety conscious due to potential hazards during tree work.

· Must have a cooperative spirit to either work in groups or perform tasks alone.

· Must be able to follow written and oral work orders. 

· Effective communication skills and an excellent work ethic.

Working Conditions:

This is a seasonal Full-Time position, Monday-Friday from 7am-3:30pm. Work is typically outdoors, rain or shine, this includes sometimes working in extreme heat and cold temperatures. The work can be physically demanding and sometimes includes heavy lifting, repetitive motion, and long periods of standing/walking. Proper safety training and gear must always be used due to the nature and environment of the work. This includes wearing proper PPE and completing safety trainings on a pre-determined schedule.
