Outback Contractors, Inc. is seeking a Field Safety Specialist with knowledge of utility electric and gas construction to provide strong safety leadership and support. This role involves developing and implementing safety programs and initiatives tailored to the specific need of each project location. This is an hourly position with a pay range of $32.50 - $72.00/hour (Rate will be based on experience in the utility industry) with an attractive compensation package including 401K retirement program, health benefits and paid holidays.

About the position:

Field Safety Specialists provide safety leadership to ensure compliance with corporate and industry safety standards, implement safety directives, assist with training program, improve safety performance, and ensure safety policies and procedures are aligned with governmental regulations.

Work Location: California - Central Valley to Bay Area coverage on project sites

Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate a work environment that supports our safety culture.
  • Maintain an exemplary example of driving safety.
  • Conduct regular safety and equipment audits, as well as yard inspections, to identify/correct potential hazards and ensure safety regulation compliance. Includes company equipment, vehicles, facilities, job sites, and safety equipment.
  • Provide a detailed written description of all job site visits. Identify safety hazards, potential risks, and areas for improvement, and develop action plans to address findings.
  • Provide technical advice, coaching, guidance, and mentoring to employees on safety initiatives and necessary corrective actions.
  • Assist in job site accidents, near-miss and occupational injury investigations to determine probable root causes and make recommendations for corrective action.
  • Prepare and submit detailed incident reports to corporate safety teams and regulatory authorities as required.
  • Assist in employee safety programs to determine adequacy including input on short and long-term strategic safety planning and development.
  • Identify best practices and assist in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce work process errors (WPE), raise safety awareness, and improve safe work practices.
  • Daily employee interface.
  • Ability to travel daily for an undetermined amount of time and mileage.
  • 40 hours per week, which may include nights and weekends.

Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or a related construction safety field.
  • Three (3) years of experience in utility electric or gas construction safety
  • Possess and demonstrate a working knowledge of civil construction activities.
  • Promote coaching based safety behavior.
  • Encourage collaborative solution resolution.
  • Prioritizes workload independently based on department priorities and goals.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Public speaking experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Field experience performing/supervising civil construction projects.
  • QEW (Qualified Electrical Worker) Journeyman Lineman
  • Knowledge of underground utility electric and gas distribution construction
  • Experience in construction safety, reporting, and record/document control
  • Ability to work effectively individually and in a collaborative environment.
  • Analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to speak and write clearly, concisely, and directly.

Our projects are regulated by federal and state laws which require all employees to successfully pass criminal background checks, MVR, and drug tests (pre-employment and random testing).
