Adviser on Peace and Security Issues – Temporary Position
The Permanent Mission of Norway to the United Nations in New York represents Norway at the United Nations and is located within walking distance of the UN headquarters in Manhattan. The Mission covers a broad set of areas in the UN such as development, peace and security, human rights, humanitarian and international law issues, elections, education, health, and climate. We share offices and administration with the Royal Norwegian Consulate General. As a fast-paced and inclusive working environment, we are looking for team players that work strategically, prioritize well and are result-oriented.
The Permanent Mission of Norway to the United Nations in New York is currently looking for an adviser for a combined policy and administrative portfolio starting in August 2024. The job will be divided between working for the Police Adviser as part of the Team for Peace Diplomacy and Operations and various other administrative tasks for the Mission. The job is a temporary position for a period of 24 months, with a possibility for renewal.
Main duties involve a diverse array of administrative tasks, including:
  • Contact with United Nations and Member States on both operational and policy matters relating to police, justice, rule of law and counter-terrorism
  • Policy tasks include but are not limited to: attending meetings, participating in negotiations, drafting speaking points and other reporting.
  • Various personal assistant functions
  • Administrative tasks include but are not limited to: planning events, facilitating visits, registering speakers and delegations, and official correspondence with the UN.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field
  • International experience and background from multilateral work and knowledge of the United Nations is preferred
  • Very good English skills, both verbally and written
  • Knowledge of the Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is strongly preferred
  • Good knowledge of the use of IT tools (MS Office)
  • Sense of order, accuracy, and punctuality
  • Ability to cope under high work pressure
  • Ability to solve problems and challenges at hand
  • Good service, communication, and collaborative skills

Additional information:
  • Regular working hours are 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. At times, you will be expected to work additional hours including occasional weekend work. Daily working hours are to be agreed upon appointment.

Conditions of employment: We offer a competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package including 25 days of annual vacation and partial coverage of health insurance. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, or a holder of a residence and work permit in the United States. This is a local hire contract. The Mission cannot sponsor a visa or work permit for this position.
Salary range: USD 6 500 - 7 500 per month depending on experience and qualifications.
