About Kūlia Academy

Kūlia Academy is a new school set to open its doors to 100 students August 2024 and expected to grow each year until 2031 when it will serve 700 students. Kūlia Academy focuses on artificial intelligence and data science. It is the first in the U.S. to offer a six-year program in these subjects. Students will spend 80% of their time in science classes doing experiments and investigations. The school believes that these skills are important for future jobs, and they want to help students prepare for them.

About the Position

Kūlia Academy, named after the Hawaiian word for "strive" and "thrive," is a groundbreaking startup school seeking a collaborative Community Relations Specialist to join our mission. We believe in fostering a dynamic learning environment where students flourish through personalized learning, interdisciplinary projects, and a strong sense of community. Collaboration is the cornerstone of our approach, and we seek educators who are excited to collaborate, innovate, and connect.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as education administration, nonprofit management, or business.
  • Grant writing skills and ability to secure funding
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to create donor solicitation letters, grant proposals, and corporate sponsorship packages
  • Effective public speaking and presentation abilities
  • Relationship cultivation with donors, parents, and local community
  • Cultural sensitivity and understanding of Hawaii’s diverse community
  • Familiarity with education policies and the ability to navigate the unique challenges of the Hawaii public school system.
  • Ability to work effectively in multiple roles: independently, as a partner, and as part of a team

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Fundraising
  • Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies to meet annual financial goals
  • Cultivate and steward relationships with donors and community partners
  • Coordinate alongside the school, school board, and foundation board fundraising events and campaigns to support the school’s mission
  • Grant Writing
  • Research and identify grant opportunities aligned with the school’s initiatives
  • Prepare completing grant proposals and applications to secure funding
  • Ensure compliance with grant reporting requirements and deadlines
  • Networking
  • Build and maintaining strong relationships with local businesses, community leaders, and stakeholders
  • Attend relevant community events and networking opportunities to enhance the school’s visibility and support
  • Legislative Engagement
  • Advocate for the school’s interest with legislators and government officials
  • Stay informed about legislative developments affecting education and represent the school at relevant hearing and meetings
  • Secure State Funds
  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities from state agencies, including securing Career and Technical Education (CTE) funds
  • Media Relations
  • Develop and execute media strategies to secure positive coverage for the school
  • Cultivate relationships with local media outlets and coordinate press releases and interviews
  • Community Engagement
  • Facilitate parent volunteers and community programs to enhance involvement
  • Organize and oversee community engagement initiatives, fostering a positive relationship between the school and the community
  • Student Supervision
  • Provide occasional supervision of students during school events or activities
  • Ensure a safe and positive environment for students during designated times
  • Adult Classes Program Management
  • Identify funding sources to support adult education programs
  • Manage the development and implementation of adult classes, ensuring alignment with community needs and available resources

Salary and Benefits

Salary and compensation for this role is aligned to the salary schedules produced by the Hawaii Government Employees Association (HGEA). The salary range for this role is BU13 SR20-24. Experience and additional professional credentials factors into placement on these schedules, and the classification and compensation department for the State of Hawai‘i will produce a salary range based on a multitude of factors.

Pay: $72,000.00 - $78,000.00 per year
