Founded in 1968, Meals at Home dba Meals on Wheels Northeastern Illinois' mission is to foster health and contribute to individual well-being and independence by delivering nutritious meals, medically prescribed diets, and providing other supportive services to the home-bound elderly, disabled, and others temporarily unable to care for their nutritional needs.
With a powerhouse movement of roughly 800 volunteers who assist in meal preparation, packaging and delivery of meals (Monday through Saturday, including holidays and inclement weather) for clients living in communities north of Chicago to the Wisconsin state line, MWNEI serves a rapidly growing client base which is expected to serve more than 1,000 clients in 2024. Reporting to the Executive Director, and based in Evanston, IL, the Controller will serve as a critical leader in achieving financial and operational goals. As a key member building a small, focused finance team, the controller will partner closely across fundraising, operations, food service and procurement. The right candidate will manage external reporting, operations controlling, and cost accounting, working closely with the Executive Director.
Specific responsibilities will include:
·Ensures the accurate and timely completion of monthly, quarterly, and yearly close and audit support activities.
·Continually improves the financial accounting system and accuracy of cost accounting.
·Demonstrates knowledge of financial accounting, budgeting, control and reporting and product costing
·Prepares monthly balance sheets, income statements and profit and loss statements in accordance with GAAP.
·Provides financial analysis and projections and leads external reporting activities.
·Builds an accounting team to identify key trends, variances, and areas for improvement.
·Supports Executive Director in ad hoc financial analysis and performs other related activities as required.
Qualifications & competencies
· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or other quantitative discipline, MBA preferred.
· CPA with active license required
· Manufacturing industry experience preferred, but not required
· 12 years of experience in accounting or finance leadership roles with progressively increasing responsibilities, including FP&A, manufacturing controlling, cost accounting, and/or business partnering
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills; comfortable and credible with internal stakeholders and external audiences
· Advanced financial modeling and business planning skills
· Experience with accounting and accounting systems, advanced Excel skills, proficiency in Word and PowerPoint, comfortable with remote access and collaboration technology (Teams, SharePoint)
· Leadership – ability to attract, retain, and grow quality talent, mentor, and coach employees
· Hands-on leader – as a small, growing nonprofit, staff members wear many hats, growing the organization while maintaining day to day operations and keeping the big picture in mind.
