We guide children to develop to their fullest potential and are proud to be one of the few public Montessori schools in the nation’s capital, offering an accredited program from preschool through sixth grade.
Essential ResponsibilitiesMajor areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
  • Understanding and promoting the Shining Stars Montessori Academy PCS vision, mission, and goals to students, parents, and the community.
  • Delivering the Primary Montessori Curriculum with fidelity while incorporating culturally relevant practices and ensuring compliance with state learning standards.
  • Developing and administering an authentic Montessori Lower Elementary curriculum and assessments aligned with the District of Columbia’s Common Core State Standards.
  • Conducting daily observations/assessments of student learning and modifying instructional methods to meet individual student needs, including those with special needs and English Language Learners.
  • Preparing the classroom environment daily to meet children’s various needs.
  • Organizing and maintaining accurate record-keeping/reporting for all student activities, including achievement and attendance as required by the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) and Public Charter School Board procedures.
  • Participating in ongoing professional development, staff meetings, and recommended conferences and training programs.
  • Instructing students in the principles of the school’s Grace & Courtesy and Peace curriculum.
  • Holding a minimum of two formal conferences yearly with parents to communicate student progress effectively.
  • Communicating regularly with parents to promote the school’s mission and objectives.
  • Being available to the Classroom/Teaching Assistant for sharing questions and observations.
  • Participating in the school’s cycle of evaluation and maintaining an atmosphere of collegial support.
  • Modeling integrity, curiosity, responsibility, creativity, and respect for all individuals.
  • Assisting with additional duties as assigned.
Education & Qualifications
  • Elementary certification (ages 6-9) from a MACTE approved program (AMS, AMI, IMS, NCME, etc.) is required; full certification preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Elementary Education or a related discipline is required.
  • Valid Licensure or certification in Elementary Education and a passing score on Praxis I and II is highly preferred.
  • Advanced degrees and multiple credentials (e.g., Special Education, ESOL) are a plus; Spanish or French fluency is also beneficial.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
  • Teaching experience in diverse instructional settings and a commitment to cultural empowerment and inclusive practices are preferred.
  • A passion for fostering independent, confident, and intellectually curious children.
  • A good listener with a love for children and a sense of humor.
