Announcement of Vacancy for:
Position: Audiologist
Minimum Qualifications :
Must have a degree and license in audiology.
Must have proven experience and competence in working with children with special needs.
Must have the ability to work collaboratively with district staff, students, parents, and agency representatives.
Performance Responsibilities
Diagnostic and Evaluation Services: Provided to students
  1. PK students who fail hearing screenings and others upon referral
  2. Who cannot participate in routine screening procedures
  3. With known hearing impairments to monitor the status of the loss
  4. Referred with educational concerns related to hearing and auditory processing and/or are being considered for special programming
  • To determine need for and appropriateness of HATS, Hearing Assistive Technology Systems
  • To determine impact of hearing loss on student's ability to hear and understand speech in the educational environment
  • Prepare reports, records, and materials and disseminate to appropriate personnel
  • Coordinate acquisition of reports, records, and material from outside agencies and disseminate to appropriate personnel
  • Provide documentation of services to students who are Medicaid eligible
Referrals and Follow-Up:
  • Make appropriate referrals for audiological, educational, or medical assessments
  • Maintain contact/relationships with allied professional, referral services and families
  • Counsel, provide guidance and in-service to students, parents and teachers regarding hearing and hearing loss, amplification needs and equipment, and acoustic treatment of classrooms
  • Become knowledgeable of resources available in SC, such as parent/self-help groups, financial resources, etc. Functions as a resources/contact for parents and teachers
  • Consult with the DHH/Sp. Ed./General Ed. teachers concerning ways to facilitate student's use of spoken English
  • Determine appropriate audiological follow-up for each student
Equipment Management:
  • Work with families/outside audiologist to determine whether an assistive listening device is an appropriate recommendation
  • Provide orientation, maintenance and counseling to students (and family when needed) regarding personal devices
  • Provide in service to teachers staff and family members regarding care, maintenance and troubleshooting of hearing aids/cochlear implants/FM equipment used in the educational setting
  • Perform minor hearing aid/cochlear repairs
  • Coordinate sending hearing aids out for repair, or contact parents/clinical audiologist to help facilitate repair
  • Maintain and fit FM systems and related equipment
  • Maintain current knowledge about hearing aids, cochlear implants, FM technology
  • Make appropriate recommendations related to the need and use of hearing aids, classroom amplification, and FM systems.hearing assistive technology
  • Request necessary supplies and equipment needed for educational audiology
  • Coordinate calibration of diagnostic equipment
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems and requisition repairs
  • Maintain audiological equipment inventory
  • Help with selection and acquisition of new equipment
Functions as an Educational Resource and IEP Team Member:
  • Demonstrate and active role in the IEP team providing information regarding the DHH student
  • Participate in interactions within and outside the field
  • Work collaboratively with other IEP staff and parents in the best interest of the student
  • Consult with parents and school personnel concerning the individual needs of each student
  • Continuously improve knowledge of Audiology and related areas
  • Assist teachers in the development and implementation of accommodations, curriculum modifications and appropriate classroom strategies
  • Monitor student progress and make informed, timely educational suggestions
  • Conduct classroom observations to determine how effectively a DHH student us using his/her hearing to gain information
  • Conduct sound level measurements when needed
  • Examine the physical environment of the classroom and make recommendations about adaptations to improve listening conditions
Maintain Professional Standards:
  • In addition to adhering to the Code of Ethics of ASHA, demonstrates an understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • Review and implement the Policy and Procedures manual for educational audiology
  • Assist in policy-making and department procedures
  • Work within educational audiology budget
  • Maintain student confidentiality
  • Maintain appropriate resource files related to educational audiology
  • Develop and update educational audiology forms
Term: 200 days
Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in compliance with the Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel

Salary: Spartanburg School District Six Salary Schedule
