• We’re on a mission to unlock economic opportunity for adult ESL learners in the U.S.

In the U.S., 60% of adult immigrants without a postsecondary degree are unemployed or underemployed due to a lack of English skills. However, traditional workforce training courses are often inaccessible to ESL learners, many of whom need foundational English language education in addition to technical training.
Pace AI bridges this gap. We are partnering with community colleges and adult schools to build the only AI made just for ESL that fast tracks English language acquisition for last-mile workforce training and essential skills.
We’re a small team of certified English language teachers and AI research scientists/engineers. You’ll tackle problems that are not only intellectually challenging—working with advances in AI/LLMs and building products from 0 to 1—but also make a significant impact on ESL teachers and students. We’re lucky to be backed by leading investors in AI and ed-tech—E14, GSV, Antigravity, Allen Institute for AI Research, Transcend Network Fund, among other strategic angels like the co-founder / former CEO of Chegg.
🏗️ What You’ll Work On
As An ML Engineer, You’ll Work With Product And Engineering Teammates To Build Core ML Offerings From The Ground Up. Examples Of Projects Include

• Personalizing content and lessons to different student levels
• Developing new AI features for English language practice

You Might Be a Good Fit If You Have

• 5 years of industry experience in building AI/ML OR relevant M.S. with 3 years of industry experience OR relevant Ph.D. with research and/or internship experience.
• Fluency with Python.
• Deep applied experience or academic expertise with 1 of the following areas: ML, NLP, LLMs/RAG, deep learning, or statistical learning theory.
• Knowledge of relational databases and proficiency with data munging for model training and fine-tuning.

📍 Your location
You must be physically based in the U.S. with a preference for candidates in the San Francisco Bay Area.
