LHH is Hiring a Public Records Officer Near Seattle, WA

Location: Washington State – remote (must reside in WA state)
Duration: Temporary – 6-12 months – with possible extension beyond 12 months
Pay: $35-$45/hour – DOE
Hours: M-F flexible schedule 6 am – 3 pm, 7 am- 4 pm, 8 am- pm, 9 am -6 pm, 10 am – 7 pm
Open to PT and FT (20 hours to 40 hours)
There is a parking lot on-site that is free of charge if someone does want to come in to grab their laptop which will be provided by the client.
LHH seeks an experienced Public Records Specialist to join our client's team. The ideal candidate will have over 3 years of experience in public records production within Washington State. The primary purpose for this position is to act as a Public Records Officer for SPS and fulfill records requests under the Washington State Public Records Act
Responsibilities:
  • Serves as a designated Public Records Officer for the client
  • Acts as the point of contact for public records requests, responds to requests for public records and ensures that all state-mandated deadlines are met.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the Washington State Public Records Act and applicable regulations/case law.
  • Provides advice and training to department staff and attorneys regarding compliance with the Public Records Act, including exemptions and protections afforded under the act.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Interacts professionally with staff, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Possesses strong attention to detail and proofreading skills.
  • Assists the General Counsel, Senior General Counsel, other Public Records Officers, and/or outside counsel if legal action related to a public records request ensues.
  • Coordinates responses to public records requests with outside counsel or investigators, as necessary.
  • Maintains various databases related to public records, including a public records log.
  • Maintains a strong working knowledge of all software or electronic management systems used for gathering, redacting, and providing public records.
  • Summarizes and synthesizes information from records and reports as requested.
  • Ensures the confidentiality and integrity of information obtained while acting as a Public Records Officer.
  • Performs legal research as necessary to accurately apply exemptions.
  • Assists the Senior Legal Assistants tasked with responding to student record requests by reviewing emails and items related to student discipline.
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, state and federal laws related to public school districts including, but not limited to, the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) and attorney client-privilege and work product doctrine.
  • Can effectively cope with change; can shift gears comfortably; can decide and act without having the total picture; can comfortably handle risk and uncertainty.
  • Strong understanding of Washington State public records laws and regulations.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Absolute must-haves:
  • General knowledge of the Washington State Public Records Act.
  • Minimum of 3 years of public records experience
  • Have experience doing high-volume redactions using Adobe Pro
  • Be committed to a 6-12 month contract
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Three (3) years of Public Records Officer experience; each year of law school and legal work experience may substitute for a year of relevant experience; Bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Any equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work will be considered.DESIRED CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:Bar admission or Paralegal Certificate
