DPW Seasonal Laborer

Seasonal Part-time (non-Benefited)
Hours: 40 hours per week
Pay Scale – part-time Wage Scale, Level 1, Step 9 - $15.00 per hour
The Department of Public Works is seeking Seasonal Laborers to perform a variety of maintenance work and operate a variety of hand tools & equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of municipal facilities, grounds, parks and trees, roads, water distribution systems and sewer infrastructure.

Essential Functions: (The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.)
Major Duties:
Assists in excavation work by digging manually and backfilling; uses shovel and wheelbarrow.
• Carries heavy material (sand, stone, tools) and may assist mason, mechanic or another skilled laborer. Under specific directions, may assist in laying pipe and in resurfacing e.g., patching berm.
• Assists in cold patching and black top work by shoveling cold patch into potholes and/or wheeling & unloading blacktop to areas as instructed
• Performs miscellaneous painting, seeding and loaming.
• May assist in cleanup operations of public property, e.g., raking leaves, general cleaning, ball field maintenance, weeding, trimming, mowing lawns, brush removal etc.
• Manual excavation of soil for tree planting, cemeteries and other purposes.
• Performs mulching, watering and staking of various planted trees and shrubberies.
• Painting fire hydrants, weed whacking various locations.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from High School or GED equivalent, or any equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating ability to perform the above duties. Some experience in construction and maintenance duties; ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Special Requirements:
Valid Massachusetts driver’s license.

Supervision Received:
Works under the immediate supervision of the Crew Supervisor; may receive guidance from a skilled laborer or other higher graded laborer in the Department.
Tools and Equipment Used:
Motorized vehicles and equipment, including pickup truck, utility truck, plate compactor, saws, pumps, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, mobile or portable radio. May operate chain saw, brush saw, compressor, cutting torch, tamper, jackhammer, rototiller, line painting equipment, snow plow and removal equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee must constantly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee is occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
