Bay Nature Institute is Hiring a Marketing Manager Near Berkeley, CA

Bay Nature Institute is a nonprofit, independent media organization devoted to environmental journalism covering the San Francisco Bay Area. We publish the quarterly Bay Nature magazine, produce live field visits, and conduct educational seminars that connect the people of the San Francisco Bay Area to our natural world and motivate them to solve problems with nature in mind. With nearly 7,000 active members, Bay Nature is a community of learning and engagement.

The Marketing Manager is a member of the Business Team accountable for acquiring new members. The position grows Bay Nature’s membership by creating and executing external marketing, messaging, and partnership campaigns.

The Marketing Manager is a part-time (20 hours/week) non-exempt employee and reports to the Executive Director. An excellent candidate will possess high energy and an entrepreneurial spirit with strong creative and project management skills.

I. Member Acquisition

• Develop and implement digital marketing strategies to:

  • Drive high quality new user traffic to the baynature.org website using social media and SEO/SEM strategies.
  • Acquire new email newsletter subscribers by optimizing the placement, design, and messaging of email capture pop ups and landing pages at baynature.org.
  • Convert email newsletter subscribers to paying members through the creation of an autoresponder series directing readers to the membership section at baynature.org.

• Develop and implement direct mail strategies to acquire new members through targeted mail campaigns to qualified geographies and affinity groups.

• Develop and implement partnership strategies to acquire new members through wholesale relationships with nonprofit organizations, corporations, and governmental agencies.

• Working with members of the editorial and business teams, write the weekly Bay Nature email newsletter, improving its performance as a member acquisition, event marketing, and member engagement tool.

• Track, analyze, and improve membership acquisition and retention KPIs.

II. General

• Participate in Bay Nature business and staff meetings.

• Meet with Executive Director once a week.

• Participate in Bay Nature board meetings as relevant and appropriate.

• Participate in Bay Nature strategic planning processes and discussions.

• Attend and represent Bay Nature in public forums, workshops, conferences, and presentations, as determined in conjunction with Executive Director.

III. Compensation

This is a hybrid position that requires physical presence in the Bay Area, one day per week at the Bay Nature office in Berkeley, and some night and weekend events requiring time shifting of work hours. The position’s salary is $2,600.00 monthly paid at the end of each month, annualized to $31,200.00 on a 50% FTE basis. Benefits include paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays, participation in the Bay Nature 403(b) retirement plan, and coverage under the basic Bay Nature Kaiser health insurance plan through California Choice Benefits.
