Qualifications/Requirements:

Education and Licensure:

  • Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from an accredited program.
  • Valid and current state licensure as a Speech-Language Pathologist.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Clinical Experience:

  • Prior experience in a skilled nursing facility or similar setting is preferred.
  • Experience with adult populations, including individuals with swallowing disorders, cognitive impairments, communication deficits, and language disorders.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Proficiency in assessing, diagnosing, and treating communication and swallowing disorders in adults.
  • Familiarity with standardized assessment tools and therapeutic techniques appropriate for geriatric populations.
  • Knowledge of various communication modalities (verbal, non-verbal, augmentative, and alternative communication) to accommodate individual needs.
  • Understanding of cognitive-communication disorders and their impact on functional abilities.
  • Ability to conduct dysphagia assessments and implement appropriate strategies for safe swallowing.
  • Knowledge of relevant documentation and billing practices in a skilled nursing facility setting.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with patients, their families, and interdisciplinary team members.
  • Empathy and patience to work with individuals who may have communication difficulties or cognitive impairments.
  • A collaborative approach to working with other healthcare professionals, such as physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, and physical therapists.

Compliance and Documentation:

  • Adherence to legal, ethical, and regulatory guidelines for speech-language pathology practice.
  • Competence in maintaining accurate and timely documentation of evaluations, treatment plans, progress notes, and discharge summaries.

Continuing Education:

  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development and continuing education activities to stay updated with advancements in the field.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand, sit, and move around for extended periods to evaluate and treat patients.
  • Physical dexterity to manipulate therapeutic materials and equipment.
  • Capacity to lift and position patients as needed during therapy sessions.
