Library Assistant - Circulation

We are currently seeking a vibrant team member for a 40hours per week position as a Library Assistant in the Circulation Department atthe Concord Free Public Library. The Concord Free Public Library, located in abeautiful, historic space in Concord Center has an impressive history, and anexciting future. The Library celebrated its 150th anniversary last year and hasjust become the first certified sustainable library in Massachusetts!

The duties of the Library Assistant include: constantcustomer contact at a busy circulation desk using RFID and other technologies,the use of automated library systems to register patrons, and processingrequests/items according to defined procedures.

Qualifications: HS Diploma, plus 1-6 months libraryexperience. Attention to detail and strong customer service and communicationsskills are essential. The position includes working one evening a week andevery other Saturday. Full salary pay range is $21.17- $29.76;starting pay based on qualifications and typically within the first half of the range.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Circulation Supervisor and/or Branch Librarians, provides circulation desk and other services to Library patrons; explains use of reference databases; assists patrons in answering their questions.Performs a variety of clerical and other library support services; checking books in and out, collecting fines and ensuring that shelves are in order.Responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under the direction and control of the position. Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and initiative in completing tasks, particularly in situations not clearly defined by precedent or established policies and procedures. Incumbent is called upon to handle a significant amount of detail, each varying from the other in substance and content, requiring incumbent to approach workload with flexibility.

  • Provides positive, courteous service to public and internal customers in a team-oriented environment to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
  • Performs circulation responsibilities; registers patrons for library cards; checks in and out library materials using RFID and other technologies; processes reserves and other requests; processes interlibrary loan requests; routes items in from and out to network libraries; assists patrons with catalog searches and using technology such as self-checkout, navigating the Internet and accessing digital media; collects funds from library fines and lost materials and collects funds from the sale of merchandise for the Library Friends, Library Corporation and other related organizations. Reconciles daily cash receipts.
  • Assists patrons in locating materials in the library; performs reference work upon request; answers patrons’ questions.
  • Moves materials received from the network delivery of patron donations to other areas of the library.
  • Assists library patrons with electronic and digital resources including downloadable books, music, and other media.
  • Shelves materials and maintains shelf order.
  • Creates brief cataloging records and performs data entry, sorts books and returns them to their proper location; sorts deliveries and checks in items.
  • Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
  • Performs other related duties as required, directed or as the situation dictates.
  • May deliver books to homebound Concord residents who participate in the Direct to You Program.
  • Regular attendance at the workplace is required.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma plus one to six months library experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to effectively interact with all members of the public in a courteous and tactful manner; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with coworkers.
  • Proficient computer skills; ability to operate a broad range of office equipment including telephone, copier, etc.
  • Knowledge of library principles and procedures; familiarity with automated library systems and related applications; knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, forms and equipment; knowledge of reference sources.
  • Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment with constant interruption.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Normal office environment, not subject to extreme variations of temperature, noise, odors, etc.Majority of work is performed in a quiet work environment, with constant interruptions.Frequently subjected to the demands of other individuals and the volume and /or rapidity with which tasks must be accomplished.

Operates computer, printer, video display terminal, calculator, telephone, copier, facsimile machine and all other standard office equipment requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity. Standing, walking, balancing, crouching, grasping, pulling, reaching, crawling and stooping are required.
