City of Savage is Hiring an Assistant Fire Chief Near Dakota, MN

JOB
The Assistant Fire Chief of Training and Operations performs administrative and management of the Fire Department’s operations, training initiatives, and professional development of staff. This position supports the overall administration of the Fire Department; assumes command of the department in absence of the Fire Chief, and assists the Fire Chief in planning, coordinating and delivering Fire services to meet the goals and objectives of the department.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Supervise and assign duties to employees under their command. Encourages employee growth and development. Makes recommendations relating to personnel and staffing needs. Establish department training standards and policies. Develop short-and long-term training plans to ensure adequate response. Ensure that firefighters meet required standards. Act in the absence of the Fire Chief. Assumes command at major fire scenes and directs the responding agencies. Serves as a liaison between the department and other city leaders during significant incidents. Facilitates significant incident debriefings, identifies areas of improvement, and implements subsequent changes. Represent the department and City at public venues. Communicates with the public; demonstrates and present before community groups, schools, and other organizations or institutions as assigned. Responsible for completing employee performance evaluations and address individual and team performance issues according to City and bargaining unit guidelines. Assist in coordinating and overseeing of the general maintenance and upkeep of fire facilities and equipment. Support the Chief with strategic planning, preparation, and management of the department’s annual budget. Evaluate programs and program activities including implementing goals and objectives, evaluating operations, and making recommendations for improvements or changes. Maintain relationships with other governmental agencies, schools, businesses, and residents for coordination of fire department community relations and participate in activities as directed. Respond on or off duty to fire calls and medical emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a week; provide guidance and assistance to subordinates on the scene as appropriate. Participate in continuing education to maintain or upgrade knowledge as required by department policy or state mandates. Stay updated on developments in the fire industry and changes in related laws and ordinances. Assist in other departmental administrative activities as assigned.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
WORK ENVIRONMENT 1.) Normal shift = eight (8) hours for five (5) consecutive days. 2.) Work indoors and outdoors, in both a controlled environment and adverse conditions when on a fire and/or emergency scene. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Type of Activity Frequency Walking/standing: Walk to truck and at fire scenes S Sitting: Sit for training sessions S Standing in One Place: May stand in one place operating large hose appliances O Climbing: Climbing stairs, buildings, hills, etc., to fight fires O Pulling/Pushing: Pulls various lengths and diameters of hose from trucks; may pull objects/individuals from fires O Crawling/Kneeling/Squatting: Throughout interior fire attack O Bending/Stooping: Picking up items and moving hoses O Twisting/Turning: Movement during fire attack O Repetitive movement: M Lifting waist to shoulder: Picking up & carrying hose bundles O Lifting knee to waist: Lifting items from fire apparatus M Lifting floor to knee: Carrying various items M Exposure to hazardous environment M Emergency Driving/Travel M S = Significant M = Moderate O= Occasional
