POSITION SUMMARY

Provides professional nursing care for patients in assigned Emergency Room and floats to the medical/surgical area according to established procedures. Acknowledges and responds appropriately to the hospital’s customer relations philosophy, including the five fundamentals of the AIDET program.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Performs assigned tasks and duties in compliance with hospital and nursing department policies, protocols and procedures. Delivers nursing care in an organized manner to groups of patients in compliance with hospital and nursing department policies, protocols and procedures. Provides patient care based on the nursing process. Performs triaging and reassessment as necessary for all ER patients upon arrival and as needed. Directly reports to the Registered Nurse. Functions directly under the supervision of the Registered Nurse in the ER. Monitors patient’s behavioral and physiological status. Assists with patient flow of the ER department, and provides quality patient care. Communicates effectively and collaboratively with all staff, patients and family members as appropriate.

2. Demonstrates patient-centered/patient-valued behaviors. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in meeting age related and handicapped patient’s needs.

3. Is accountable for maintaining and improving own nursing knowledge and skills. Participates in Quality Improvement activities.

4. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education Graduate of an accredited School of Vocational Nursing.

Required Certification Current registration with the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas; CPR certification; ACLS preferred – but will train.

Physical Demands Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking. Lifts, positions, pushes, and/or transfers patients. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and/or crouching.

Working Conditions Regularly exposed to risk of bloodborne diseases. Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances. Exposed unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness). Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Handles emergency or crisis situations. May perform emergency care. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours. Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries. Includes working rotational shifts, holidays and weekends as needed. Morning scheduled personnel are to arrive by 6:45am, and the evening scheduled personnel are to arrive by 18:45 (6:45 pm) in order to complete chart review.
