Position Summary:
Mammography Technologist operates a mammography unit and produces breast radiograph images to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease for both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients under the direction of a physician. This position requires intimate patient contact, excellent communication skills and the ability to work with initiative and accuracy. The Mammography Technologist explains the procedure to patients, positions and immobilizes the patient’s breast in unit, and observes the scanning process. This involves monitoring the video display of the area being scanned and adjusting the density or contrast to improve picture quality. Mammography Technologists then review and evaluate the film or image recording plate to determine if images are satisfactory for diagnostic purposes. Throughout this whole process, mammography technologists use radiation safety measures and protection devices to comply with government regulations and to ensure the safety of patients and staff. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, imaging, patient education, data collection and maintaining regulatory compliance.
Essential Functions:
1. Must perform 2D and 3D screening and diagnostic breast imaging procedures with use of diagnostic mammographic, ultrasonic, and stereotactic localization modalities.
2. Must understand and perform 2D and 3D mammograms and perform required QC tasks.
3. Reports problems with equipment, staff, or operations within the department.
4. Adheres to and follows all quality control procedures, including accurate and timely documentation of results, as required by Federal and State regulations.
5. Adheres to and follows all regulations concerning the ACR Mammography Accreditation Program.
6. Accurately enters all appropriate patient and departmental data, including order tracking and charges into the EMR system.
7. Must remain in compliance with all accreditations including but not limited to: American College of Radiology, Indiana State Department of Health and other license and certification requirements.
8. Must be able to communicate with the ordering provider STAT if there is an abnormal report and communicate results to patient with abnormal report. Send letters out to patients for normal results.
9. Schedule necessary follow-up appointments with the patient and PCP
10. Gains patient cooperation by reducing anxieties; providing explanations of imaging procedures; explaining equipment; answering questions.
11. Ensures operation of mammography equipment by completing preventive maintenance; instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories (This would be added to the requirement of reporting issues with equipment)
12. Documents patient mammogram services by completing patient order charting.
13. Continues education in job knowledge by participating in training opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
14. Any other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. Excellent communication skills; active listening as well as written and oral comprehension/communication skills; Gives full attention to what individuals are saying, asks appropriate questions to gain better knowledge of situation(s) and repeats information to ensure understanding; must have patience and presence of mind; bilingual (English/Spanish) language skills helpful
2. Participation in extensive training, maintaining constant attention to detail, while working with anxious patients
3. Strong foundation of knowledge regarding anatomy and pathology of the breast
4. Ability to vary positioning depending on body habitus and patient flexibility; demonstrate a high quality of patient positioning.
5. Knowledge of how and why to perform a proper work-up of suspected abnormalities, as a critical member of the breast cancer detection team.
6. Ability to prioritize and adapt to changing priorities; Good time management skills.
7. Problem sensitivity skills; empathetic/understanding of patients.
8. Organized with an attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
9. Knowledge of legal requirements about drawing blood, handling fluid samples and use of relevant medical equipment and material
10. Cultural diversity awareness and skills; respects all people regardless of race, nationality, or social standing.
11. Ability to work independently (self motivating) and as a team member
12. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, providers, managers, patients, agency resource personnel and community members in general
Education, Experience and Licensure:
1. High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
2. Working knowledge of EMR Systems.
3. Certification by the American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT)
4. Current Indiana Licensure
5. Current Advanced Certification Certificate in Mammography by the ARRT
6. Current BLS/CPR Certification
7. Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a radiographer required.
8. Able to maintain required mammography continuing education as mandated by the Mammography Quality Standards Act.
9. Computer knowledge required: Windows, Microsoft Office applications and internet savvy.
