SUMMARY
The insurance clerk will transmit, post, and work clams to insure payment in a timely manner. They will be in direct communication with insurance companies and patients’ families to resolved insurance and account balance issues.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current Hepatitis B vaccine, flu vaccine, and negative TB test
- Knowledge of front office procedures
- Team oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Knowledge of grammar, spelling, and some medical terminology
- Skill in operating a computer, copier, multi-line phone system, and calculator
- Skill in greeting patients and answering the phone in a pleasant and helpful manner
- Knowledge of accounts receivable practices and medical business office procedures
- Knowledge of coding procedures
- Knowledge of insurance company reimbursement procedures and practices
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and co-workers
- Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness
- Ability to perform work which requires full range of body motion, sitting and/or standing for long periods of time with varied activities, such as sitting, walking stooping, lifting, bending and reaching
- Manual dexterity sufficient to operate keyboard and necessary office equipment
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds and view and type on the computer for long periods
- Ability to perform work which may be stressful at times due to work load, constant interruptions, emergency situations and upset patients
- Ability to work night and weekend hours if scheduled
- Ability to work in an environment with frequent exposure to communicable disease, toxic substances, medical preparations and other conditions common to a clinical environment
DUTIES
- Transmit electronic and paper claims daily
- Obtain audit trails
- Post payments to accounts
- Write off adjustments
- Copy and deposit insurance checks
- Balance work daily
- Run and work aging reports monthly
- Stay aware of changes in fee schedules of insurance companies
- Notify manager of companies that delay payment or have lower than average reimbursement
- Stay up to date with coding and make recommendations if coding changes are needed
- Research refund requests and submit for payment
- Perform essential functions of receptionist and phone attendant and cross cover when needed
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Attend meetings as directed including professional growth and development meetings
- Perform other duties as directed by management
