Description

Join our team as a Heavy Equipment Operator and play a pivotal role in maintaining the infrastructure of Lee County. This position involves skilled work in maneuvering large vehicles and handling various public works equipment to upkeep county rights of way, canals, and roadways.

The Lee County Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for providing safe and efficient transportation as well as maintaining stormwater systems for the residents of Lee County.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent most of the time spent working in this class. Work involves operating various types of equipment for ditch maintenance operations.

  • Operates one or several types of heavy equipment, such as pickup trucks with trailers, dump trucks hauling ditch material, skid steer, front-end loaders, and excavators.
  • May operate hand and power tools.
  • May be required to perform labor duties such as lay sod, shoveling, and/or raking duties. Haul debris to the dump site. Haul road maintenance materials to job sites and stockpile at operations.
  • Assist in other job duty responsibilities such as working on asphalt patch trucks and repairing potholes. Occasionally will install pipes.
  • Perform minor operator-related maintenance on related equipment.
  • Repairs and maintains equipment; follows safety regulations; takes actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects; locates underground utility services, such as pipes or wires, before beginning work; monitors operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met. Performs related work as assigned.
  • This job works under general supervision according to daily operations assigned by the Supervisor, Maintenance, and Crew Supervisor.
  • Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Education, Experience, Licensing

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to High School graduation or GED equivalent and one year of heavy equipment operation or closely related experience.
  • Possessing a valid Class B CDL with air brakes endorsement and an acceptable driving record is required.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position, which is subject to Drug & Alcohol Workplace testing as provided in DOT regulation 49CFR-parts 40 and /or 382.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possessing a valid Class A CDL with air brake endorsement is preferred.

Supplemental Information

  • Communication: Ability to communicate effectively with team members.
  • The work days and hours for this position are Monday - Thursday 7:00 am - 5:30 pm.
