SummaryUnder the general supervision of the Plant Manager, the Safety Supervisor performs a variety of tasks and oversees all safety and training activities related to the plant and production areas. This role directs and coordinates the company's safety program, including updates to the written program, hazard and risk assessments, employee training, accident/incident investigation assistance, and regulatory compliance activities. The Safety Supervisor is expected to prioritize quality, service, and profitability at all times.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Assist in the development, evaluation, and updating of written safety programs.
  • Plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards.
  • Evaluate practices, procedures, and facilities to assess risk and ensure adherence to the company’s safety plan.
  • Conduct orientation, monthly safety meetings, and other training sessions as needed.
  • Provide training and presentations on safety matters and accident prevention, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and forklift operation.
  • Maintain safety metrics, including those for forklift operation and LOTO.
  • Monitor compliance with policies and laws by reviewing employee and operational practices.
  • Maintain OSHA reporting logs, company records, and submit required reports.
  • Inspect equipment and facilities to identify and address unsafe conditions.
  • Oversee Maintenance Smart and manage work orders.
  • Assist with accident/incident investigations promptly to determine immediate and root causes.
  • Support the resolution of workers' compensation claims and monitor related paperwork through the company’s carrier.
  • Oversee near-miss incidents and accidents, ensuring the correct paperwork is completed.
  • Recommend resolutions for identified hazards and risks in the workplace. Identify opportunities for improvement or new preventive measures. Conduct safety walks throughout the plant.
  • Perform safety surveys and inspections, prepare written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures, and follow up to ensure implementation.
  • Audit the facility and site for compliance with company and SQF security standards.
  • Lead efforts to ensure security measures and programs are current and well-defined. Update standard operating procedures (SOPs) and other documents as necessary.
  • Coach all employees on safety and ensure adherence to safety policies.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of machine-specific safety procedures.
  • Work to maintain good morale and positive interactions among associates.
  • Provide commendations, counsel, and corrections to associates, and administer disciplinary action as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QualificationsTo successfully perform this job, an individual must be able to effectively carry out each essential duty. Experience with plant safety programs, hazard/risk analysis, accident investigations, and OSHA workplace regulations is required. The individual must demonstrate leadership, decision-making, change facilitation, conflict management, and strong interpersonal skills. The qualifications listed below represent the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
EDUCATION And/or EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university, or four years of related EHS experience and training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be knowledgeable of OSHA workplace requirements and have experience managing safety programs in a manufacturing facility. Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs is required. Knowledge of Maintenance Smart is a plus.
Language Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate effectively with employees and management.
Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages.
Reasoning Ability
  • Ability to solve complex or practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited experience may exist. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Peripheral vision, the ability to observe an area while eyes are fixed on a given point, is also required.
  • The employee may be required to lift up to 50 lbs. or more.
  • The employee must stand on concrete surfaces and may be exposed to indoor manufacturing environments with noise from equipment.
  • The employee must climb stairs and work in a refrigerated environment with temperatures ranging from 35 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The job is fast-paced, and the ability to manage stress is essential.
This full-time, regular position typically works Monday through Friday for 8 hours per day, with no travel required. The employee must be able to work assigned shifts, including weekends, with minimal overtime. Availability for 24/7 emergencies and on-call duties is required.
