General Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Director of Catechesis and Evangelization and alongside the Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministry , The Coordinator of Youth Ministry is to walk with young people and their families in becoming active, lifelong disciples of Christ. This is accomplished through pastoral, liturgical and catechetical approach toward evangelization and catechetical formation. The Coordinator of Youth Ministry provides primary leadership for the design and implementation of parish ministry to its youth. The Coordinator of Youth Ministry is to work on forming parents and adults to also walk with youth in their faith as to form disciples. All catechetical instruction must be in keeping with the magisterial teachings of the Catholic Church. In addition, a s a member of the Catechesis and Evangelization department, the Coordinator of Youth Ministry will collaborate with the other members of the department in formation events that affect the parish at large .
Principal Accountabilities
  • R esponsible for adherence to the vision of the Diocese ( stated above) and the mission of the Parish.
  • E xpected to collaborate with the Department of Catechesis and Evangelization and reports directly to the Director of the department.
  • R esponsible for pre-evangelization opportunities for the youth and families of the parish in order to form community identity and establish peer relationships.
  • A ssist the youth in forming intergenerational relationships within the liturgical and ministerial life of the parish so that youth become active collaborators in the life, community and mission of the parish.
  • R esponsible for articulating the vision of youth ministry within the parish. This includes:
  • Process of Evangelization and Discipleship
  • Cross-Communication within offices of ministry
  • R esponsible for students in grades 7-12.
  • E stablish a collaborative relationship with parents and families and will assist them, as the first and best catechists of their children, in providing prayer opportunities and catechesis in the home.
  • R esponsible for observing critically and recruiting parents and adult volunteers year around.
  • R esponsible for developing parents and adult volunteers to be the “youth ministers” (small group leaders, discipleship group leaders, etc.) within the parish.
  • R esponsible for maximizing the talents and charisms of the parent and adult leaders through the parish, the Diocese, and/or an approved Diocesan catechist formation program ( i.e. St. Junipero Serra Institute, Saint Francis de Sales, John Bosco, etc.).
  • R esponsible to meeting the needs of the parents and families in respect to where they are in their journey with Christ.
  • R esponsible for developing a process of evangelization for youth and families that is focused on kerygmatic catechesis and Salvation History both of which are to be Christocentric.
  • D evelop a catechetical framework within initial catechesis using the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
  • O ffer opportunities for youth which engage the whole person: spiritually, intellectually, pastorally, and relationally.
  • In accordance with Catholic teaching, offer opportunities for youth to develop and practice the knowledge and interpersonal skills needed to advocate for the marginalized in society.
  • P rovide opportunities for service and outreach in order help youth understand their role as a disciple of Jesus Christ in the spiritual and corporal works of mercy.
  • P rovide opportunities and mentorship to youth in leadership roles so they may learn to be disciples of Christ.
  • P rovide opportunities for youth and families that are being discipled to discern their vocation in order to properly pray, discern and follow God’s path for their life.
  • R each out to the local community, schools, athletic organizations to evangelize and disciple youth and families beyond the church walls.
  • O rganize and supervise suitable fundraising activities.
  • O versee the planning, developing and implementation of First Eucharist and Confirmation preparation for youth grades 7-12 eligible for the sacrament.
Typical Decisions And/or Recommendations Made In This Position
  • Creat e and see through a catechetical calendar for growth in evangelization for youth grades 7-12.
  • E ffectively manage group dynamics as well as interpersonal relationships with youth and adults .

Working Conditions And/or Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work nights and weekends with occasional overnight stays.
  • Ability to perform computer work for lengthy periods.
  • Ability to travel moderately within the diocese to attend youth events, ministry workshops, formation, etc.
  • Ability to sleep in arrangements available on retreats, conferences, mission trips, etc. (For example: bunk beds, air mattresses, shared hotel rooms)
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds without assistance .
Travel Requirements
  • Som e travel required , up to 10%
Education And Experience Preferred
  • The minimum requirements include active participation in leadership roles in high school youth ministry and/or college campus ministry programs, and at least 60 hours of college credit, and a demonstrated basic knowledge of the doctrines of the Catholic faith.
  • Ideally, a candidate would hold a bachelor's degree in education , catechesis, or theology, with 1-3 years experience or active participation as a leader in their own high school and/or college campus ministry programs.
  • Successful completion of Diocesan Safe Environment requirements and training.
Knowledge And Skills Preferred
  • Knowledge of the Catholic Church, including an in-depth familiarity with its doctrine, structure, functions, sacraments, rites, and liturgies.
  • Knowledge of Catholic Youth Ministry, Evangelization and Catechesis (and the church documents related to these), spiritual development, and small group discipleship practices.
  • Knowledge of child development through the adolescent period, large group management techniques, and the role of family in the development of children’s spirituality.
  • Knowledge of budgeting principles and practices.
  • Skill in communicating well: orally, publicly, and in writing.
  • Skill in strategic planning and risk management.
  • Skill in creating, writing, and editing various documents and graphic flyers.
  • Skill in event planning and management
  • I ntermediate proficiency with MS Office required .
  • Basic proficiency with desktop publishing software (Canva, MS Publisher, Adobe Photoshop, ProPresenter), website updating, and database software (Parish Soft) required .
  • Advanced proficiency with social media required .
  • Successful completion of the Parish Safe Environment process.
  • Continues personal education through appropriate classes and workshops.
  • Continues spiritual development by going on personal retreats, pilgrimages, etc.
  • Ability to lif t up to 50 lbs. if needed.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus
  • Musical ability a plus
