DescriptionPRN Phlebotomist
Essential Functions
- Receives the physician request and collects blood and urine specimens from patients, properly identifying the patients, and promptly drawing and correctly labeling the specimens while maintaining a pleasant relationship with the patients, visitors and staff.
- Uses developed scripts for specified patient interactions.
- Accurately performs venipunctures, heel sticks, and finger sticks, ensuring proper specimens for testing as well as ensuring patient safety. Ensures delivery of the specimens to the processing area as soon as possible to maintain specimen quality.
- Follows established procedures and policies to obtain optimal test turn-around-times.
- Uses a computer to review and receive laboratory orders.
- Handles incoming and outgoing Vocera calls utilizing excellent customer service skills.
- Cleans and stocks phlebotomy cart and maintains work area as described in standard work.
- Meets defined workload productivity standards.
- Supports and utilizes LEAN principles and standard work.
- Fully understands and is committed to providing quality service to all clients internal and external.
- Provides Point of Care Testing for patients: Maintains competency in obtaining and processing samples and perform daily QC on POCT machines.
- Performs EKG
- Assist in transport of ED patients as needed.
- Clean emergency department rooms and equipment between patient visits.
- Assist RNs and Emergency Department Technicians with basic patient care tasks as requested.
- Restock rooms with equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrates the following customer service interpersonal skills:
- Takes personal responsibility for work, actions and attitudes.
- Respects patients, peers, clients, students, physicians, service representatives, and other hospital staff.
- Demonstrates positive and effective communication skills.
- Cooperates with peers and other hospital staff to build and maintain an effective healthcare team.
- Trains new employees and students.
- Performs special department projects as designated.
- Serves on hospital and laboratory committees as approved by supervisor/manager.
- High school diploma preferred or high school equivalency.
- Completion of certified phlebotomy course or one (1) year previous phlebotomy experience required.
- Certification or Licensure for other professions with phlebotomy in the scope of practice may also be accepted. Examples include Certified Medical Assistants, LPNs, and paramedics.
- Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter abuse training specific to population served within three (3) months of hire.
