ABOUT THE JOB

Company Description: Specular Theory is an award-winning immersive content and technology startup. We create a wide variety of VR experiences ranging in entertainment, education, enterprise, and gaming. Our company creatively drives all productions from beginning to end with a unique company culture of experimenting, breaking new ground, and winning awards. You will be working with our Aerospace VR training division to develop next-gen software and hardware that adds functionality to custom flight controls. You will combine state of the art virtual and mixed reality environments with motion control systems to replicate real flight.

Job Description Summary: Specular Theory has several new products in development, so we are expanding our hardware team in Livermore, CA that designs, manufactures, and assembles flight simulators. We are looking for a meticulous and creative Technical Writer / Documentation Specialist who can develop comprehensive documentation for our hardware products. This role involves working closely with our engineers and technicians to create detailed assembly instructions, assembly drawings and BOM’s, user manuals, and maintenance guides that are easy to follow for end-users. This is a temporary contract role, but it may expand into a direct-hire full-time position if the candidate exceeds expectations and fulfills other responsibilities. 

Roles and Responsibilities

· Collaborate with engineers, designers, and technicians to gather technical information while they assemble and test prototype hardware. 

· Develop assembly instructions, add itemized ballons to assembly drawings, and update the bill of materials (BOM) during hardware builds.

· Develop guidelines for internal manufacturing and assembly processes.

· Develop test plans, procedures, and reports using inputs from engineers.

· Develop installation instructions, user manuals, and maintenance guides for the customer.

· Develop special documentation and paperwork required by the US Air Force.

· Develop documents describing internal company policies and procedures. 

· Create detailed schematics, diagrams, and illustrations to support the written content. 

· Help issue CAD Part Numbers and assist with configuration management and revision control of CAD parts and BOM’s.

· Ensure documentation is up-to-date with any changes in the design or assembly process.

· Standardize documentation practices and create templates for new documents.

· Review and edit existing documentation for clarity, consistency, and completeness.

· Stay updated with industry standards and best practices for technical writing and documentation.

· Ensure all documentation is accurate and easy to understand.

Required Qualifications

· Proven experience as a Technical Writer or Documentation Specialist, preferably in hardware or manufacturing industries.

· Strong technical proficiency and ability to understand and interpret complex technical concepts.

· Ability to write about technical information accurately and convey that information clearly and concisely.

· Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.

· Proficiency with Windows computers, the MS Office suite, and working in SharePoint databases. 

· Proficiency with tools for creating technical diagrams and illustrations (e.g., CAD software, Adobe Illustrator).

· Attention to detail and high level of accuracy in documenting detailed instructions and specifications.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively gather information from various stakeholders.

· Ability to work independently and to collaborate in cross-functional teams.

· Being comfortable in a rapid start-up environment that may involve multiple projects and have shifting priorities. 

· Being flexible and willing to occasionally work on small tasks outside this basic job description.

Preferred Skills

· Experience with content management systems (CMS) and documentation tools.

· Experience with CAD software, ballooned assembly drawings, and BOM’s. 

· Experience with mechanical products and interpreting technical engineering inputs.

· Experience working in a production or manufacturing environment.

· Experience with assembly processes, assembly tools, and machining equipment.

· Familiarity with industry standards and best practices in technical documentation.

Education and Experience

· Bachelor's degree in Technical Communication, Engineering, English, or a related field.

· Minimum of 2 years of experience writing technical documentation for a manufacturing company. 

· To conform to US Government export regulations, the applicant must be a US citizen or a national, US lawful, permanent resident.
