J. I. Barron Elementary (PK-6) is Hiring an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR Near Louisiana, LA

FLSA:Exempt

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • As set forth in Louisiana Standards for State Certification of School Personnel (Bulletin 746)Counselor K-12
  • Valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate and meets the requirements as stated in Bulletin 746 with a Master’s degree in school counseling from a regionally accredited institution or
  • A valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate and a Master’s degree with the equivalent hours and courses required for a Master’s degree in school counseling as listed in Bulletin 74
  • Ancillary Counselor K-12-An applicant who does not hold a Louisiana teaching certificate but meets all other requirements above

REPORTS TO: School Principal

SUPERVISES: Assigned Staff

TERM: Nine Months

SALARY: Nine Month Teacher Salary Schedule

JOB GOAL: To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist

students in making educational, occupational and life plans

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Components below will be used for Guidance Counselor evaluation in conjunction with measures of student and school growth.

Components

Individual Student Planning-The school counselor coordinates activities related to students’ individual plans for academic, personal/social, and career goals.

System Support-The school counselor engages in broader school improvement efforts and engages with external resources to ensure that the school has access to the most current trends and resources in counseling.

Responsive Services-The school counselor responds to urgent needs and enables others in the school community to respond efficiently and effectively to changing student needs.

School Counseling Curriculum-The counselor proactively plans a curriculum

of activities aligned with data and school-specific needs.

Each of these components should be rated Ineffective, Effective: Emerging, Effective: Proficient, or Highly Effective and weighted equally to determine a Professional Practices Rating based upon observations and a collection of evidence from the school counselor’s work.

I. To provide services to students and their parents eighty percent (80%) of the instructional
day
II. To work with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related to such problems as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment
III. To aid students in course and subject selection
IV. To assist students in evaluating the aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of
individualized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation
V. To work to resolve students’ educational handicaps
VI. To be accessible to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding and maturity
VII. To guide students in their participation in school and community activities
VIII. To confer with parents whenever necessary
IX. To maintain student records and protect their confidentiality (excluding clerical functions)
X. To supervise the preparation and processing of college, scholarship and employment applications
XI. To explain the guidance program to the community
XII. To organize and conduct annual “Career Day”
XIII. To arrange for tutors and summer school work
XIV. To work effectively with school personnel and staff
XV. To demonstrate self-direction
XVI. To submit accurate records and reports promptly
XVII. To exhibit professional ethics
XVIII. To establish and execute a professional growth and self-evaluation plan

XIX. To foster open communication and positive relationships with school personnel, staff and
community
XX. To perform any other duties assigned by the school principal (excluding clerical functions)
XXI. To perform any additional duties assigned by the Superintendent and/or evaluator
XXII. To follow state, school board, and school policies
