JOB TITLE: HEALTH CARE AIDE (SECONDARY)

REPORTS TO: BUILDING PRINCIPAL AND REGISTERED SCHOOL NURSE

CLASSIFICATION: PARAPROFESSIONAL E

WAGE: $17.58 - $21.55

TERM/SCHEDULE: FULL-TIME

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School diploma or equivalency required (CNA or LPN - preferred)
  • Experience working in the healthcare field .
  • Completion of Medication Administration Training at MPSD.
  • Excellent computer skills and familiarity with Infinite Campus, Google platform, scanning and faxing records.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working with school aged children preferred
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with students, staff and parents
  • Ability to accept delegated tasks under the direction and license of the school nurse
  • Demonstrate the highest level of confidentiality and ethical behavior

JOB SUMMARY

The Health Aide provides direct care to the students at LHS to help manage their health needs under the direction of a Registered Nurse. The Health Aide assists the School Nurse in caring for the health care needs of students at Lincoln High School. The individual is responsible for obtaining applicable health information, administering first aid, and dispensing medication.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assist with immunization compliance and reporting for Lincoln High School according to the deadlines.
  • Assists with health history by determining individual student health needs and provides initial management or illness and injury according to first aid training and district injury and illness protocols.
  • Follow protocols regarding the health, injury care and emergency care for students and staff.
  • Monitors student’s health status during short-term rest of recovery.
  • Initiates parent contacts to arrange transportation for ill or injured students and records all incidents in the electronic health log. Provides school RN with details of an incident. Follow up with other associated documentation that may include an accident report.
  • Demonstrate proper medication administration, dispenses medication throughout the day; administers oral medications according to school policy and demonstrates an understanding of safety and care when administering medications and what to report to the school nurse. Will learn and perform blood sugar monitoring, glucagon, insulin administration, Epi pen, and other potential nursing delegated tasks.
  • Follow plan of care developed by RN for students with chronic health needs to include but not limited to students with Diabetes, Seizure Disorders, Life Threatening Allergies, Cardiac Conditions.
  • Assists students, parents and staff to understand and comply with communicable disease control requirements and current practices.
  • Assists RN with follow-up on students.
  • Recognizes health problems with students on a daily basis
  • Complete accurate documentation in the electronic health record.
  • Performs clerical duties such answering the phone and taking messages; filing records and correspondence; records standardized information in educational and health records; reviews pupil records to obtain information to share with appropriate staff; initiates health records for new students and properly transfers health records of students who are transferring to another school.
  • Maintains an orderly and attractive health room, orders supplies as needed and keeps first aid supplies available for immediate use.
  • Provides routine first aid services (temperature, bandages, assist with any student needs)
  • Instructs students regarding their personal responsibility for their health as appropriate. Refers to RN when problems are beyond scope of training
  • Attends staff development sessions as directed by the district and requested by the school nurse.
  • Maintains the district’s standards relative to the confidentiality of information about students and school-related concerns.
  • Attends to the safety and well being of all students, including but not limited to, the use of universal precautions as per blood borne pathogens training.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in taking blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiration.
  • Follows the written protocols related to public health events to include documentation and the care of students.
  • Demonstrate the proper use of PPE.
  • Field trip preparation regarding health needs in a safe and timely manner.
  • Support the school based dental clinic.
  • Member of the school's emergency response team.
  • Other duties as assigned by RN.

simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students, parents and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIESs - Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies
