Giant Steps of St. Louis is Hiring a Special Education Teacher Near Maplewood, MO

Special Education Teacher - Autism Specialty for the 2024-25 school year beginning August 14th. Optional immediate employment for our summer school program.

Position Summary: Provide specialized instruction in an individualized program at a private therapeutic day school for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Emphasis is on: enhancing social/communication skills, positive behavior intervention, developing academic and daily living skills, and increasing access to opportunities in the community.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field.

  • Special Education Teaching Certificate.

  • Experience teaching children with Autism preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement and supervise students’ Individual Educational Plans (IEP) and behavior management plans.

  • Effectively work with a large team of professionals to coordinate services, assess abilities and problem solve behavioral strategies for students.

  • Implement evidence-based strategies for students with Autism.

  • Train staff in the use of student behavior management and effective instructional strategies for students with autism.

  • Collect and analyze student data to monitor progress.

  • Participate in staff development training that focuses on working with students with Autism.

  • Must have no physical limitations. The candidate must be able to lift and be mobile.

  • He/She must participate in the CPI model of physical restraint training.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Knowledge of autism and proven skill in implementing evidence-based instruction and behavior management of students with autism.

  • Knowledge of ABA principles and strategies.

  • Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, strategies, testing, etc.

  • Knowledge of the IEP process and effective goal writing.

  • Knowledge of and skill in implementing differentiated instruction based on student data and need.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, administrators,

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff and outside therapists.

  • Good organizational skills and flexibility.
