ASSISTANT CONTROLLER
Position Summary
The Assistant Controller is responsible for daily accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, audit, and financial statement preparation and reporting for the Financial Affairs division. The Assistant Controller shares responsibility with the Vice President for Financial Affairs/Chief Financial Officer to provide stewardship and fiduciary leadership to the University.
Position Requirements - Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or similar field is required.
  • MBA or related master’s degree in accounting, business, or related field is preferred.
  • CPA, CMA, or similar designation preferred.
  • Five (5) years progressive experience in accounting.
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) with understanding and successful practice of accounting rules, requirements, and practices of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB). Experience in accounting for an institution of higher education and/or fund accounting is preferred.
  • Extensive experience using Microsoft Excel, including the use of advanced formulas and pivot table. Must be proficient in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office programs. Experience with Poise/Jenzabar and Raiser’s Edge preferred.
  • Strong typing and 10-key skills are necessary to successfully manage time pressures.
  • Excellent written, organizational, and verbal communication skills required while maintaining confidentiality of information.

If not already an active church member in a local congregation in the East Texas region, following appointment, the candidate of choice will be required to join a Baptist church or mainline Christian church.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for quarterly financial statement preparation, review, and reporting
  • Responsible for coordinating the annual financial audit
  • Manage banking transactions and activity
  • Oversee accounts payable, purchasing, and accounts receivable staff
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax filings
  • Responsible for financial aid draws, transfers, and reconciliation of those funds
  • Collaborate with the University’s Business and Financial Aid offices to insure proper accounting for financial aid funds
  • Responsible for reconciliation of all bank account statements each month
  • Responsible for posting monthly depreciation and balancing the fixed asset ledger to the general ledger
  • Review and approve journal entries
  • Responsible for accounting for all gifts from Institutional Advancement
  • Assist in developing and managing the University’s annual operating budget
  • Assist departments with questions about account balances, budgets, and general ledger activity
  • Maintain confidentiality of all financial data
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the Vice President for Financial Affairs/Chief Financial Officer
Physical Requirements
Sitting for long periods of time. Occasional standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Work Environment
Must work on campus. This position is not eligible for telework. The Assistant Controller may be required to work occasional irregular and extended hours during the workweek. The Assistant Controller may be expected to work some nights and weekends to fulfill responsibilities or to represent the University at special events, church and community activities, and outside organization meetings and conferences.
ETBU expects all faculty and staff to become a part of the University community by participating in activities and events that occur on the campus throughout the year, which may occur during evenings and weekends.

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications, skills, and experience.
