IMMEDIATE VACANCIES:
Temporary Full-Time: Lahaina
Permanent Full-Time: Kahului
SHIFT MAY VARY, MUST BE ABLE TO WORK ALL SHIFTS, INCLUDING: NIGHTS, WEEKENDS, AND HOLIDAYS. 
Performs subprofessional technical work in planning, coordinating and conducting recreational programs and activities; and performs other related duties as required.
 
Distinguishing Characteristics:
 
These classes are characterized by their responsibility to perform subprofessional technical work in support of district or Countywide recreation program activities. Such work involves planning, coordinating and conducting recreational activities which do not require the full application of professional recreation knowledges, philosophy, theories and practices.
 
Grade I: This level is distinguished by its primary responsibility for planning, coordinating and conducting district recreation activities and/or supervising lower level Recreation Assistants.The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.
 
Performs subprofessional technical work in planning, coordinating and conducting athletic, cultural, social and recreational activities; meets with and reviews re­quests and suggestions made by community groups regarding their recreational needs; plans, organizes and coordinates recreational activities in consultation with super­visors and incorporates appropriate community input; publicizes the recreational activity; seeds and schedules teams; manages athletic facilities by promoting safe practices, preventing vandalism and abuse; provides attendant and housekeeping services; coordinates and supervises the use of parks, playgrounds and facilities; recruits, trains and assigns officials; arranges for awards; arranges for housing and transportation for visitors as necessary; monitors the overall activity; may officiate; compiles results and provides results to participants and the news media; prepares reports of activities; recommends necessary improvements and repairs to parks, playgrounds and facilities; may supervise lower level recreation personnel.
 Training and Experience: (1) Graduation from high school and two years of full-time experience working directly with groups and individuals in conducting a recreation program or teaching a recreational activity and for:
 
Grade I: one year of full-time experience in organizing, implementing and conducting recreational programs;
 
or (2) any equivalent combination of training and experience.
 
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
 
Knowledge of: practical application of the principles, practices and techniques of recreational activities; the proper care and maintenance techniques of equipment and facilities; principles and practices of instruction; group behavior; public relations.
 
Ability to: plan, coordinate and conduct recreational activities; stimulate participant interest, enthusiasm and confidence in recreational pursuits; instruct and demonstrate recreational activities; understand and follow oral and written instructions; maintain good working relationships with the staff and the public; keep records and prepare reports .
 
Health and Physical Condition:
 
Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper for performance of the duties.

TEMPORARY POSITIONS:
Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service, you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent as well as other temporary positions.
