JOB
The City of Monticello is currently accepting applications for a full-time communications specialist. The City of Monticello offers a generous benefits package including free single health coverage with an HSA contribution, immediate PTO, 12 paid holidays and a discounted Community Center membership.General Statement of Duties: Creates engaging external and internal communications across a variety of resources in support of the City’s mission and commitment to open, responsive government. Supervision Received: Works under the general and/or administrative supervision of the City Administrator. Supervision Exercised: None.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Builds and promotes the City of Monticello brand and reputation through communication resources and materials. Develops and recommends internal and external communications policies and procedures for the City.Develops and executes communication strategies for the city, departments, and projects.Evaluates communications resources, assesses effectiveness, and recommends adjustments as appropriate.Assists leadership team with formulating approaches to communicating the vision, mission, and goals of the City to residents and other stakeholders. Writes, edits, designs, and produces public information pieces to highlight important information in a readable, approachable manner. Adapts information to best fit different media/resources.Develops and distributes press releases and manages press release database.Provides local media with articles about specific City programs or activities of general interest.Maintains and enhances City websites, including navigation and structure, information and images, alerts, quality control, and usage report records.Maintains e-newsletters and social media accounts, including strategies, content creation, driving engagement, and responding to inquiries on behalf of the City.Creates and distributes the bi-annual City newsletter, including content planning, creating layout and graphics, writing and editing articles, and proofreading to ensure accurate and relevant information in an easy-to-read, eye-catching format. Assists with internal communication, including employee newsletters, flyers, and engagement activities.Coordinates the City’s digital sign program and other advertising programs.Assists City PIO in developing, maintaining, and executing emergency response protocol; During public safety emergency, serves on the Emergency Response team by assembling and distributing public safety information. Provides annual update to Council on communications efforts.; Prepares staff reports for Council consideration as needed.Coordinates programming of government access channel and works with others to develop or record specific cable programming as needed. Performs other related duties as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSBachelor’s Degree in in Journalism, English, Public Relations, Communications, Public Administration, or closely related field plus two (2) years of experience. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Previous experience working for local government.Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud.Experience managing and responding on social media platforms.Experience creating and executing communication campaigns and/or strategies.
