Description

Mission: In partnership with our community, the National City Police Department is committed to providing the highest level of service and public safety. We will pursue this commitment with an unwavering resolve while always respecting the rights and dignity of those we serve.
Under general supervision, to perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; control traffic and enforce state and local traffic regulations; conduct complete investigations of crimes involving adults and children; and perform related work as required.

Key Responsibilities

Patrols assigned areas in radio car and on foot; answers special calls, including investigation of burglaries, robberies, deaths, suicides, thefts, felonies, and other law violations; conducts initial and follow-up investigations; directs traffic when appropriate; stops drivers who are operating vehicles in violation of the law; warns drivers against illegal practices; makes arrests for traffic violations; testifies in court in connection with the prosecution of offenders; serves warrants and subpoenas; administers first aid in emergency cases; answers complaints on such problems as domestic disturbances, obnoxious animals, and health code and local ordinance violations; investigates suspicious circumstances; takes custody of lost and found property; performs crowd control and parade or riot work; takes crime prevention measures and assists in controlling problems of juvenile delinquency; books prisoners into City jail and supervises their custody; furnishes information and directions to the public; submits complete written reports of all cases assigned; participates in training courses and programs; cooperates with other law enforcement agencies; gathers and preserves evidence; may relieve dispatchers, desk officers, and superiors in their absence; may talk in front of local groups regarding crime prevention and law enforcement.

Minimum Qualifications

Under general supervision to perform a variety of police duties in the prevention of crime and enforcement of law and order. We invite you to apply if you meet the following requirements:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
  • Successful completion within previous three (3) year period of Basic Police Academy which meets all the requirements of the California Commission on Police Standards & Training (POST); OR
  • Employment within the last 12 months in position requiring California Basic POST Certificate; OR
  • Current enrollment in Basic POST Academy and have successfully completed the first half (1/2) of a POST recognized academy at the time of application.
License/Special Requirements: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License is required at the time of appointment. Must meet all other California POST requirements.

Examination Process

Applications are accepted on-line only at www.nationalcityca.gov. Based upon a review of applications received, those applicants who best meet the requirements indicated above will be invited to continue in the selection process. A list of qualified candidates will be forwarded to the Police Department for their consideration.
Successful candidates will be subject to a background investigation including fingerprinting, computer voice stress analysis (CVSA), psychological evaluation, and a thorough medical examination. There are certain types of conduct, which will be automatic grounds for disqualification. Please read the information on the Disqualifying Criteria to help you identify some of the common areas of the background investigation process that may cause a delay or prevent you from competing in the selection process.
