Education Training Resources is Hiring a Career Counselor (CPP) Near Oneonta, NY

Position Available: Career Counselor (CPP) 

Summary of Position Functions:

Provides engaging orientation and instruction for the students entering into center life, administers tests, and evaluates student progress in the Career Preparation Period.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide appropriate intellectually stimulating instruction that supports the introduction to center life, academic and career skills training, and the placement of students in each class, taking into consideration the unique abilities of each student.
  • Identify, select, and modify instructional resources to meet the needs of the students with varying backgrounds, learning styles, and special needs. 
  • Oversees off-center student trips on a weekly basis.
  • Manages the classroom by moving about the room to tutor, coach, evaluate and assist each student as the need arises.
  • Coordinates with the Independent Living Advisors, Counselors and other staff as necessary to resolve issues affecting student training.
  • Provide employability, social skills, diversity, and conflict resolution training to students.
  • Model appropriate behaviors, mentor students and monitor both positive and negative behaviors through interventions.
  • Monitor classroom operations in terms of absenteeism, tardiness, etc. 
  • Assist in student orientation by searching students’ property upon entry into the center

Skills and Competencies: 

  • Possess strong oral and written communication skills
  • High energy level and ability to engage with students
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective instructional strategies, classroom management and content field
  • Ability to quickly learn job corps methodologies and strategies
  • Ability to use different methods and mediums in delivering course material 
  • Ability to effectively respond to student issues as they arise
  • Proficient using common computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. 

Educational Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in social services, or related field preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-to-year basis 
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record

Physical Activities:

  • Reading, Writing, and Communicating fluently in English

  • Sitting, standing, moving about, or walking for occasional, or frequent periods 
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, and other office equipment 
  • Kneeling, bending at the waist, stooping, and reaching overhead
  • Retrieving and storing files and supplies; occasionally carrying and, or lifting light objects

Working Conditions: 

  • Campus and general office setting
  • Indoor and outdoor environment
  • May be required to work a flex schedule to include evenings and weekends
  • Exposure to possible confrontations with students
