City of Pharr, TX is Hiring an Animal Control Officer (Open Positions: 1) Near Pharr, TX
Under the general supervision of the Animal Control Supervisor, the Animal Control Officer catches and impounds stray or unlicensed animals. The Animal Control Officer is also responsible for work of routine difficulty in performing related work as required by Supervisor or Director.
Essential Functions
• Maintain regular, reliable and prompt attendance, physically present to work.
• Patrols all areas of the city in search of stray or unlicensed animals.
• Catches and impounds stray or unlicensed animals.
• Responds to all complaints pertaining to animals; and
• Makes the proper follow-up and disposition of the animal.
• Picks up and disposes of, in the proper manner, all sick, injured or dead animals; and
• Perform another laborious task assigned by Supervisor or Director.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Physical Demands
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items relating to field. Significant walking, moving, climbing, carrying, bending, crawling, handling, standing, pushing, and pulling. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds depending on circumstance and/or animal.
Position Type/Expected Hours of WorkThis is a full-time, non-exempt position, with a 40-hour work week. Incumbent must have the ability to work flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends, if needed. Participation in City sponsored special events, trainings, or meetings may be required.
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements
High School graduation or an acceptable equivalency diploma and vocational training are required.
Must have a Animal Control Officer basic training course certification within one (1) year of employment.
Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skill and ability may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Possession of a valid, appropriate Texas driver's license preferable and an acceptable driving record. Pre-employment drug screen and physical required.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge - Knowledge of handling animals, hazards and safety precautions of the work; good knowledge of ordinances, laws and regulations pertaining to animals. Good verbal communication. Knowledge of all other required ability for filling out paperwork, citations, work orders, dog bite reports ect.
Abilities - The ability to destroy and dispose of unclaimed and diseased animals, follow oral and written instructions, deal tactfully with the public, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the general public. Ability to speak English and Spanish.
Authority and Accountability
Employees in this class are delegated the authority necessary for performance of assigned duties, within departmental restrictions, and are directly accountable to the Animal Control Supervisor.
