What you’ll do: 

Assists with the day-to-day supervision of the anesthesia equipment, materials management, and equipment management functions. Performs a variety of duties related to the use, maintenance and management of anesthesia equipment and supplies while assisting in optimizing the efficient flow of patients during their procedures. Under direct supervision of the anesthesia care giver, assists throughout the perioperative care of the patient, including pre-op, peripheral nerve block preparation, intra-op, and post-op anesthesia needs. As practice assistant, aides in room turnover, transport of patients, and any other assignment that facilitates smooth operations of the Surgical Center. 

Accountabilities: (include, but are not limited to) 

  • Assemble, test, disassemble and clean anesthesia equipment used during surgical procedures. Ensure there are no leaks and/or broken parts. Assist with the preventative maintenance program. Provide routine troubleshooting, maintenance and calibration of anesthesia equipment and monitors. 

  • Place leads for cardiac monitors, blood pressure cuffs and oximeter on all patients for every case. 

  • Assist anesthesiologist when he/she performs spinals, epidurals, caudal injections and nerve blocks. 

  • Assist with patient positioning. 

  • Under supervision, sets up medications i.e. pentothal, relaxants and other drugs needed for cases. 

  • Stock anesthesia drugs and supply carts. Responsible for checking expiration dates of medications and sterile supplies (if applicable). 

  • Stock Anesthesia work room. 

  • Check medical gas room for gas supply. Inform maintenance if gases need to be ordered. 

  • Process sterile items in the processing area and store as appropriate. 

  • Receive and store general supplies. Assist with ordering and maintaining par levels. 

  • Assist with training of employees. Inspect their work for accuracy and quality. 

  • Advise the Clinical Coordinator of any equipment problems who can notify the biomedical company. 

  • Act as liaison for anesthesia care givers and Surgical Center staff. 

  • Participate in case turnover for the OR/Procedure Rooms.

  • Collect data as required for participation in Quality Improvement activities and/or studies. 

  • Meet with vendors to assure cost-efficient purchasing of supplies. 

  • Oversee the preventative maintenance program implementation for all anesthesia machines, monitors, gas analyzers, and any equipment related to the provision of anesthesia. 

  • Use asepsis in cleaning to protect self and others. 

  • Utilize all cleaning products according to instructions to provide adequate cleaning/disinfecting. 

  • Reports potential and/or adverse events appropriately.

Qualifications


Who you are: 

 Knowledge: 

  • Working knowledge of office equipment and Software 

  • Familiarity with HIPAA, insurance regulations, policies, procedures, and other regulatory policies

  • Medical office procedures, policies, practices and medical terminology, telephone protocol and professional etiquette 

  • Understanding of electronic medical systems 

Qualifications: 

  • High School diploma or equivalent required

  • Perioperative experience preferred. 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills: Ability to communicate professionally (i.e. using expressive vocabulary that communicates a complete and detailed message, avoiding spelling errors, employing a respectful tone) 

  • Ability to maintain enthusiasm while facing a high volume and a large variety of duties 

  • Ability and interest in learning procedures and software functionalities that could improve the effectiveness and efficiency of individual and department efforts 

  • Organized, with the ability to prioritize and multi-task 

  • Extremely reliable, patient and professional 

  • Reacts calmly and effectively under stress

  • Interprets, adapts and applies guidelines and procedures appropriately 

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective and professional working relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers and the public by demonstrating empathy and tact

  • Must be a team player with a positive attitude, the ability to work effectively with a diverse population, and the ability to demonstrate patience and professionalism 

  • Promotes teamwork through collaboration, represents the practice in a professional manner, and maintains the strictest confidentiality on all patient issues
