Exempt
TERMS:

Supplemented according to board-approved supplement schedule

Certified teaching duties preferred; multiple subject areas available

JOB GOAL:

  • To instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, mental attitudes, strategy, and physical training necessary to achieve individual and team success
  • To provide leadership for students and staff in the development of moral values, good sportsmanship, fair play, pride of accomplishment, self-discipline, and self-confidence

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Alabama teaching certificate.
  • Previous coaching experience and experience in the sport to be coached
  • Employment in the school system preferred
  • Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  • Knowledge of the Board’s athletics policies and procedures, school rules, and state and/or regional athletic association rules.
  • Knowledge of student growth and development applicable to the grade level assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents, and peers.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication skills.
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
  • Knowledge of first aid and safety procedures.
  • Knowledge of coaching principles and knowledge of the assigned sport.
  • Ability to evaluate the performance of assistant coaches and determine their effectiveness.
  • Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform the position's essential functions.
  • Ability to identify and solve problems as a productive team member.
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, manage data, and produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information.
  • Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may require.

Coach as Learner

  • Continue as a life-long learner.

  • Participate in professional learning activities in the area of coaching
  • Collaborate with colleagues.
  • Learn and utilize new strategies and techniques
  • Give attention to student athletes’ grades, school conduct, and overall well-being.
  • Assists athletes in their post-secondary education selections.

Coach as Relationship Builder:

  • Create a positive culture
  • Value and respect each student-athlete
  • Recognize the potential in each student-athlete
  • Consistently encourage and support each student-athlete to reach his/her fullest potential.
  • Ensure fair and impartial treatment of all student-athletes.
  • Work with the principals, coaches, athletes in other sports, faculty, and staff to establish and maintain good sportsmanship standards in the school.
  • Work with the principals, assistant coaches, and boosters to improve and maintain existing facilities.
  • Foster good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
  • Coordinate practice areas, competition areas, training facilities, and meeting spaces with the principal and other school system personnel.

Coach as Designer and Facilitator:

  • Display a broad technical competence in the area of coaching.
  • Coordinate with the principal and athletic director to formulate budgets and submit them to the principal for approval; operate within the established budget for the sport.
  • Design conferences, clinics, and meetings to develop staff abilities and skills.
  • Maintain discipline, adjust grievances, and work to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Establish schedules for practices, games, transportation, tournaments, and special events according to school and system guidelines.
  • Report athletic injuries according to Board policy and school procedures.

Coach as Role Model and Leader:

  • Demonstrate support for the school system and its vision, goals, and priorities.
  • Serve as a role model and work toward developing good character and desirable attitudes among students.
  • Demonstrate a strong desire to win and accomplish the work necessary.
  • Administer the designated sport for the school.
  • Determine student-athlete eligibility and ensure the completion of forms, reports, or other documentation to complete this task.
  • Assist in processing a proper insurance plan for athletes.
  • Approve and submit for final approval the purchases of all equipment and uniforms bought for the sport and ensure proper purchasing procedures.
  • Make recommendations to principals and the personnel department in selecting and assigning assistant coaches.
  • Ensure that all rules and regulations of the Alabama High School Athletic Association and any board regulations regarding athletics are enforced.
  • Delegate specific duties to assistant coaches and supervise the implementation of program plans.
  • Ensure proper professional and ethical behavior from all assistant coaches and volunteers at all times.
  • Approve all sales and advertising campaigns to benefit the sport.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants in the athletic program to the maximum extent possible.
  • Maintain inventory records and is accountable for all equipment for the sport; arranges for issuing, storing, reconditioning, and properly discarding equipment.

EVALUATION: Job performance will be evaluated following provisions of the State Department of Education and/or Pike Road Board of Education policy on the evaluation of personnel.
