Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for assisting athletic programs in support of the provision of recreation services for all ages.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Assists assigned athletic programs, registration; communicates with coaches, players and parents; schedules officials and scorekeepers; enters league scores into computerized database; purchases uniforms and equipment; orders trophies; supervise field or facilities preparations; recruits sponsors.
  • Assists with tournaments and special events.
  • Assists concessions; maintains inventory; supervises concession stand operations.
  • Answers telephone calls and email from parents, coaches, volunteers and others; provides information and assistance; resolves problems.
  • Supervises the use of athletic fields or facilities; enforces department policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates and assists in the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields and facilities.
  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of recreation facilities operations and maintenance principles.
  • Knowledge of recreation program management principles.
  • Knowledge of sports league and tournament management principles.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, directing and coordinating the work of personnel.
  • Skill in the analysis of problems and the development and implementation of solutions.
  • Skill in the maintenance of athletic fields and in the operation of related equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Parks & Recreation Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include city personnel policies and procedures, city purchasing policies, sports organization policies, Georgia Recreation and Parks Association guidelines, Georgia High School Association guidelines, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of varied program administration, maintenance and supervisory duties. Inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to assist athletic programming for area residents. Success in this position contributes to the provision of quality recreation programs for area residents of all ages.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, vendors, business leaders, volunteers, school officials, representatives of sports associations, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to provide services, to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, or to motivate or influence persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
  • The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position supervises assigned part-time staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
