Heavy Equipment Mechanic Job Description
GENERAL PURPOSE: This is skilled automotive and heavy equipment mechanical repair work.
Performs skilled automotive mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and auxiliary equipment with electronic components including vans with lifts, passenger buses, dump trucks, snow plows, sweepers, spreaders, tractors, power generators, automobiles, and pickup trucks. Work involves diagnosing malfunctions; performing preventive maintenance, and repairing or recommending repairs to be contracted out such as major overhauls or specialized repairs such as emission control systems.Diagnostic and repair activities cover a wide range of items including, but not limited to, engines with and without electronic fuel injection, transmissions with and without electronic controls, drive trains, rear-ends, brakes, clutches, electrical and air conditioning systems, hydraulic systems, and welding (gas and arc) and fabricating brackets and other items.On occasion, repairs are made in the field.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Does not supervise the work of others.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the automotive repair supervisor who evaluates work performance for quality and timeliness of work performed.

SELECTION FACTORS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
(Persons applying for a position of this class should have any combination of the following experience and training.)
Two years of automotive equipment diagnostic and repair experience on gasoline and diesel equipment and related hydraulic and electronic systems; or substituting successful completion of technical training in gasoline or diesel automotive and related repair for up to one year of the experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Possession of Class B commercial driver's license or the ability to get one within 12 months. The City of Pullman can provide training and help you obtain the CDL.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Motorized vehicles for mechanical testing purposes; power and hand tools and equipment for vehicle and mechanical system work; mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, air tools, and other tools required for minor repairs and routine maintenance of motorized vehicles; electronic vehicle diagnostic equipment; phone.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals.The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds.
The noise level in the work environment is moderately noisy.
