Job SummaryThe operations manager oversees the Semiconductor Nanofabrication Laboratory – a cleanroom facility that is used by researchers, instructors, students, and industry partners. Reporting to the dean of engineering, the operations manager works with a faculty advisory board to develop and implement a vision for expanding the capabilities and customer base of the facility. The manager supervises a staff of four engineers and technicians involved with day-to-day operations, maintenance, repairs, and equipment installation. Additional areas of responsibility include financial management, safety, and user training.

As the outward face to all customers, they foster a collaborative and inclusive culture to ensure that all users feel welcomed, valued, and supported. Department/College DescriptionBuilt in 1985 to support the first ABET accredited undergraduate program in Microelectronic Engineering, the Semiconductor and Microsystems Fabrication Laboratory offers processing resources and technical expertise in the design and development of microsystems to industrial and academic customers. In addition to being a fabrication resource providing process services, the SMFL offers various levels of facility use for research and development activity. Customers have the option of using the 10,000 sq ft of Class 1000, 100 and 10 cleanroom space for its process resources only, or interacting with SMFL staff and/or RIT faculty and students.

Job ResponsibilitiesMajor Responsibilities
- Supervise the training and certification of users to ensure that standard operating procedures and safety protocols are enforced.
- Oversee and optimize the operation of the college’s cleanroom facility to provide a customer-centric environment for faculty and their research groups, instructors and their students, and external customers.
- Provide and execute a vision for improving the capabilities and expanding the customer base of the facility. This includes assisting with major grant proposals and reporting, planning and coordinating the installation of new equipment, seeking out and developing new customers, and developing new training programs.
- Supervise 4 full-time technicians and engineers as well as several student workers who maintain, repair, and operate tools that include lithography, thin-film deposition, dry etching, and other processing and characterization tools.
- Manage the facility's financial operations, including budget development and tracking, revenue projections and reporting, chargeback rates, customer quotes, user agreements, and invoices.
- Five years of experience
- Working knowledge and hands-on experience with semiconductor fabrication processes and related equipment
- Experience building and managing cross-functional teams
- Ability to handle multiple priorities and optimize solutions for multiple stakeholders
- Ability to maintain productive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and external customers
- An advanced degree in microelectronics, engineering, physics, or another closely related discipline that involves cleanroom usage.
- Research experience working in a cleanroom facility for microelectronic device fabrication
