- Participate in planning, development, organization, evaluation, and directing of physical therapy activities and programs in accordance with current rules, regulations, and guidelines that govern physical therapy practices.
- Participate in meetings and committees with administration, medical and nursing staff, as well as other related departments in planning therapy or facility services as needed.
- Develop, implement and maintain physical therapy standards, policies and procedures, job descriptions and standardization of the methods in which physical therapy will be accomplished.
- Be knowledgeable of and maintain facility and departmental policies and procedures, standards of practice, objectives, quality assurance program, safety standards and precautions, environment, and infection control.
- Ensure that the therapy and pool area is maintained in a clean and safe manner for patient comfort and convenience by assuring that necessary equipment and supplies are maintained to perform such duties/services.
- Interpret physical therapy policies and procedures to personnel, patients, residents, family members, etc., as necessary.
- Maintain files of patients receiving physical therapy including evaluation, treatment, progress notes, discharges, and Medicare required documentation/tracking, etc. as required.
- Development and implementation of computer assisted forms, functions, programs, etc. as needed.
- Work with facilitys consultants as necessary and implement recommended changes as required.
- Ensure business office receives charges and statistics for therapy services rendered.
- Ensure/oversee obtaining of insurance authorizations/visit tracking, etc. as needed for provision of physical therapy services.
- Supervise or perform the scheduling or rescheduling of patient appointments as needed.
- Assist in the selection and recruitment of competent personnel as needed.
- Provide and maintain an excellent working relationship with the medical profession and other health related facilities and organizations.
- Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis as well as a calm environment throughout the department.
- Supervision of Physical Therapy Assistants, Restorative Care Aides, and other support personnel as appropriate.
- Attendance at, participation in and development of programs/training designed for in-service education, mandatory and otherwise, on-the-job training and orientation classes for new or present personnel.
- Attend and participate in workshops, seminars, etc. to keep abreast of current changes in the health care field, as well as to maintain a professional status and licensure as per state regulations.
- Other as deemed necessary and appropriate, or as may be directed by the department director.
- Review requests for physical therapy and physicians orders.
- Evaluate type of therapy most desirable after consulting with physician.
- Provide effective and efficient evaluation and treatment and modify as needed.
- Instruct patients and/or family members and staff in home programs as well as care and use of adaptive equipment.
- Provide patient education.
- Determine proper equipment usage, application and body position, and make adjustments as necessary in the administration of physical therapy treatments (e.g., gait training, modalities, manual therapy, therapeutic exercises, etc.)
- Apply agents such as ultrasound, Estim, manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, (e.g., active, passive) etc., as required.
- Ensure therapy notes are informative and descriptive of the care provided and of the patients response to care.
- Meet with attending physician/medical director, and other medical staff, etc., as necessary.
- Have attending physician(s) review and sign treatment plans, etc.
