Works under the general direction to supervise personnel engaged in guarding, escorting, and otherwise maintaining security within the Shelby County Correction Center.
Pay Grade: 49
Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education
1. Four (4) years of uninterrupted service as a Correctional Officer or equivalent experience at the time of the announcement; AND
2. High school diploma or possess a GED.
3. Successful applicants in the promotion process will be required to satisfactorily complete a written exam, an oral interview, and an employment history review leading to selection as a candidate finalist for a six (6) month candidate finalists training period, which must be completed satisfactorily.
4. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.
1. Supervises assigned areas and assists the Shift Commander in the day-to-day operations.
2. Checks for prompt submission, completion, and accuracy of all reports.
3. Promotes high morale.
4. Utilizes excellent listening skills, resolves inmate/staff conflicts, and exhibits good communication.
5. Counsels, instructs, and disciplines employees, as needed.
6. Evaluates assigned personnel.
7. Reports any irregularities or emergencies to appropriate personnel by chin of command.
8. Observes discrepancies and address inmate’s complaints.
9. Performs other related duties as required or directed.

11. Proficient knowledge and ability of a Correctional Officer.
1. Must be able to stand, walk, (etc.) for a long period of time.
2. Must be able to operate all equipment in a correctional environment.
3. Must have sensation in their fingers and hands to touch and grasp.
4. Must have a good range of motion and (etc.) to perform the essential functions.
5. Must be able to work in outside weather (including extreme temperatures, precipitation, and wind).
6. Must be able to physically restrain violent or unruly individuals.
1. Must be able to function in a prison environment.
2. Must successfully pass a written exam, a formal interview, a pre-employee background review, medical/drug assessment, and if applicable past thirty-six (36) months’ disciplinary history will be reviewed.
3. Must not have a disciplinary higher than a written reprimand within the past twelve (12) months from the date you applied.
4. Must be able to work various shifts (8 or 12 hours), extended shifts, weekends, and holidays.
5. Must be able to move between assigned areas of the correctional facilities based on agency needs.
6. Must be able to work in a stressful high-risk environment.
7. Must utilize interpersonal skills and provide superior services to the public.
8. Must successfully attend annual training and be certified in the proper use of first aid. (CPR & AED).
