Desired Qualities of an Emerald City Roller Derby Coach

An understanding and passion for roller derby: We expect a coach to appreciate and respect the sport and our league, and act within the best interests of our skaters’ training needs. Each Individual league member may want and need different things from their experience, so it will take an adaptive and flexible person to successfully fill this role as our head coach. We hope to bring on a coach who loves the sport as much as we do and can bring their own unique experience and relationship with the sport to the table.

A positive person with strong boundaries: We are looking for someone who can set clear expectations with the team and follow through on their commitments, while leading with empathy and kindness. We hope to improve upon our strong culture and community to become more competitive without losing touch with the strength that comes from that community and connectedness with one another. We will need a coach to foster that, and help enforce best practices.

Skills:

  • Roller Derby experience preferred.
  • Basic gameplay knowledge preferred; rules, penalties, common strategies.
  • Has the ability to break down complex skills and body mechanics.
  • Is willing to learn that which they don’t already know, and continue to expand on their derby knowledge.

ECRD Gameplay Goals

We intend to improve our level of gameplay and go after more opportunities to play Roller Derby Games. We plan to recruit, train, and retain enough players to maintain a full season of gameplay. We are looking for a head coach who will help us grow, adapt, and work towards achieving these goals and any other goals we might decide to work towards.

Expectations of the Role / Tasks

  • Reports to Board of Directors
  • Upholds integrity, sportsmanship, honesty, and commitment to practices and other derby events. Holds the team to the same expectations and communicates those expectations
  • Leads Training Team in efforts to build overarching training strategy for the entire league
  • Gives 1:1 skater feedback, documents individual goals and progresses towards goal attainment
  • Builds out a long term training plan based on team needs and skill gaps
  • Drafts and executes practice plans
  • Reviews footage from ECRD games, and other games to analyze current derby strategy
  • Continuously builds upon knowledge of derby gameplay and rules
  • Assesses skater skills and managing assessments progress through ZenPlanner
  • Hosts try-outs for the season travel team roster
  • Creates game rosters based on skater eligibility and performance
  • Coordinates with Training Team and effectively delegates additional responsibilities to Training Team members
  • Leads and facilitates Training Team meetings
  • Oversees documentation and G-drive organization and upkeep for Training Team
  • Manages team expectations and culture around practices, scrimmages, and games.
  • Works with the Interleague Liaison to schedule and coordinate opponents for home and away games
  • Runs team captains elections, and delegates responsibilities to team captains
  • Works with Head Referee / officiating committee to coordinate officials staffing of games

Anticipated Volunteer Time Per Week: 6-10 hours

Stipend: $2,000 Annually

*This coaching position is not eligible to serve a board position
