Position: Maintenance Supervisor for Inmate Work Crew Program

The Town of Suffield is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor to supervise workers from the Department of Corrections inmate work crew program. The inmates will perform semi-skilled manual labor in the care and cleaning of Town facilities and grounds.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Knowledge of material, methods, and equipment used in general maintenance operations and repairs of buildings and grounds keeping.
2. Supervise inmates assigned to perform general maintenance in town facilities and grounds.
3. Determine the best method for assigned duties from the Director of Public Works.
4. Examples of duties inmate workers will perform are general cleaning of town buildings and vehicles, painting, general maintenance, landscaping, beautification projects, janitorial projects, roadside clean up, moving of equipment and furniture.
5. Transport inmates to and from the CT Department of Corrections to assigned work areas.
6. Assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of inmates.
7. Ensure inmates work safely and use provided PPE.
8. Supervision of inmates where constant supervision is provided at all times.
9. Ensure directives from the Department of Corrections are followed for workers in the inmate work crew program as provided by DOC.
10. Report any unusual events or circumstances to the shift supervisor as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education & Experience:
1. Two plus years of general supervisory experience in a correctional setting
2. Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record
3. A high school diploma or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of cleaning materials and methods used in public buildings
2. Knowledge of and ability to operate light equipment and tools
3. Knowledge of maintenance/repair work and general ability to perform routine maintenance
4. Ability to read manuals, write documents, and assist with general safety and training protocols.
5. Excellent communication and ability to supervise up to 3 employees.
6. Must be able to communicate orally or in writing with other workers and supervisor(s).
7. Strong interpersonal skills and physical presence.
8. Ability to work cooperatively with inmates, co-workers, other departments, and the general public
9. Working knowledge of occupational hazards of the job and necessary safety precautions

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands and fingers; handle or operate objects, controls, or standard office equipment; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.
The employee must regularly be able to safely lift and move up to 50 pounds and restrain the worker if necessary. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
This job operates in a professional office environment with a high standard of customer service. Multiple buildings are tended to, so transportation is a necessity. The ability to work with a variety of cleaning chemicals is a must.
Hours:
This is a part-time position up to 19.5 hours per week. Hours are 8:00 am – 2:30, Wednesday, Thursdays and Fridays
Travel:
Travel is primarily local during the business hours. Use of a town vehicle is provided.

Compensation and Benefits:
