Bering Straits Native Corporation is Hiring a Site Safety and Health Officer Near Twentynine Palms, CA

SummaryBSPS, a subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corporation is currently seeking a qualified, highly motivated Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) with federal contract experience. The ideal candidate will serve as the SSHO overseeing the implementation and adherence to the Site Health and Safety Plan, as well as periodic updates and maintenance of the Plan.
ResponsibilitiesESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESThe Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position and are notintended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Primary Point of Contact for the Safety and Occupational health issues relating to completion of assigned projects or task orders. Act as a liaison between the Contractor and Facility Safety Personnel.
  • Administer the Site Health & Safety Plan.
  • Develop SHSP for new Contracts.
  • Maintain an accurate record of and report to the ISD exposure data and accidents resulting in death, traumatic injury occupational disease or damage to property, materials, supplies and equipment incident to work performed under the contract.
  • Prepare and update Job Hazard Analysis’ as required.
  • Prepare Traffic Plans in accordance with local AHJ as required.
  • Ensure all workers are trained as appropriate for their assigned duties.
  • Conduct on-site reviews for all projects to ensure that appropriate safety plans and procedures are properly implemented and followed. Review subcontractor Activity Hazard Analyses for Work Plans.
  • Conduct and document “Toolbox Safety Talks” on appropriate, relevant topics.
  • Other duties as assigned / required.
QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATIONTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Required (Minimum) Qualifications
  • SSHO is also required to have proof of employment for:
Five (5) years of continuous construction industry safety experience in supervising/
managing general construction (managing safety programs or processes or conducting
hazard analyses and developing controls), or
  • Five (5) years of continuous general industry safety experience in supervising/
managing general industry (managing safety programs or processes or conducting hazard
analyses and developing controls), or
  • If the SSHO has a Third-Party, Nationally Accredited (ANSI or National Commission
for Certifying Agencies - NCCA) SOH-related certification, only 4 years of experience is needed.
  • OSHA 30 Hour Training
  • Competent Person Training for Trenching, Excavation, Confined Space, Fall Protection
  • First Aid and CPR Training
  • HAZWOPER Experience and Training
  • In-depth knowledge and experience with EM385-1-1
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, And Other Characteristics
  • SSHOs shall maintain competency through having taken 8 hours of documented formal, on-line, or self-study safety and health related coursework every year. Examples of continuing education activities that meet this requirement are: writing an article, teaching a class, reading/writing professional articles, attendance/ participation in professional societies/meetings etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use a computer, Word, Excel, E-mail, etc.
  • Additional specialized training or education may be required based upon tasks or hazards associated with specific Delivery Orders as required by the Government.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • U.S. Citizenship (required for access to secure areas of Military Base)
  • Experience working with a team to develop means and methods to complete construction tasks in a safe and efficient manner by identifying proper PPE and equipment.

Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for bending, stooping, sitting, walking, or standing for prolonged periods of time; most of time is spent sitting in a comfortable position with frequent opportunity to move about.

  • This position is not subject to federal requirements regarding Department of Transportation “safety-sensitive” functions.
WORK ENVIRONMENTWork Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Job is performed both on active construction sites with exposure to all types of weather heat, cold, rain, snow, exposure to dust, dirt and noise, as well as in an office setting with exposure to computer screens and requires extensive use of a computer, keyboard, mouse and multi-line telephone system. Occasional travel may be required. Occasional “off-shift” evening/weekend/holiday work may be required.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Depending upon workload supervision of additional safety employees and or subcontracted safety employees may be required.
Additional Qualifying FactorsAs a condition of employment, may be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as periodic random drug screenings, have acceptable reference and background check results to obtain access to secure areas of a military base. Must have reliable transportation to/from work.
