JOB PURPOSEUnder limited supervision, serves as a resource for providing job-embedded professional development in schools in order to generate improvement in reading and literacy instruction and student achievement. Supports and provides initial and ongoing professional development to teachers based on an analysis of student assessment and the provision of differentiated instruction and intensive intervention. Professional development includes in-classroom coaching through demonstrations. Reports to the Principal.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSDemonstrates effective instructional strategies for teachers by working weekly with students in whole, and small groups, or individually. (Reading Coaches will use the teacher’s students he or she is working with to model these strategies.)
Facilitates study groups.
Assists with the development of the school’s Reading Plan
Trains teachers in administering assessments, analyzing data, and using data to plan and differentiate instruction.
Coaches and mentors colleagues.
Works with teachers and Reading Interventionists to ensure that research-based reading programs are implemented with fidelity.
Works with all teachers (including content area and elective areas) at the school they serve, and help prioritize time for those teachers, activities, and roles that will have the greatest impact on student achievement, namely coaching and mentoring in the classrooms.
Leads or supports reading leadership teams.
Participates in the SCDE SC Reading Coach Institute (Reading Coach Professional Development Series) or an SCDE- approved alternative coach program.
Will not be assigned to a regular classroom teaching assignment, must not perform administrative functions that deter from the flow of improving reading instruction and reading performance of students, and must not devote a significant portion of his or her time to administering or coordinating assessments.
Carries out professional development in alignment with district and school goals.
Performs routine administrative/office tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, answering the telephone, sending and receiving faxes, entering and retrieving computer data, etc.
Performs related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONSRequires a Bachelor’s degree or higher and an add-on endorsement for literacy coach or literacy specialist or a Master’s degree in reading or closely related field supplemented by three to five years of experience in the classroom, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid S.C. Teaching Certificate in education. Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
