Client: Local Government
Location: Woodbridge, VAAbility to Work: HybridClearance:  Public Trust Number of Position(s): 1Work Schedule: 8 am - 5 pm (must work Eastern standard hours)Work Day: Monday – FridayThe Assistant Comptroller assists the Comptroller in managing the finances. This role involves financial reporting, budget preparation, auditing, compliance, and supervision of the accounting staff. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in governmental accounting and possess excellent analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Assist in the preparation of financial statements, budget reports, and other financial documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with government accounting standards and regulations.
  • Analyze financial data to support decision-making processes.
  • Assist in the development and monitoring of the annual budget.
  • Prepare budget forecasts and variance analysis reports.
  • Work with various departments to gather budgetary information and ensure accuracy.
  • Support internal and external audit processes.
  • Ensure financial activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard public funds.
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable.
  • Maintain the general ledger and reconcile accounts.
  • Oversee payroll processing and related reporting.
  • Assist in the development of financial strategies and long-term financial planning.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to improve fiscal health.
  • Participate in financial policy development and implementation.

Key Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or CGFM (Certified Government Financial Manager) certification is often preferred.
  • Five years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, preferably within a government setting.
  • Experience with governmental accounting standards and practices.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and financial management systems.
  • Advanced Excel skills and the ability to handle large datasets.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to present complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders
  • Knowledge of local government financial regulations and compliance requirements
  • Familiarity with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and GASB
