York County Government is Hiring a Registered Nurse (RN) Near York, SC

There are many employment opportunities throughout the York County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) in sworn capacity in the Detention Division. The Detention Center is located at the Moss Justice Center and is an 821-bed direct supervision facility that opened in March of 1995. The Detention Center is charged with holding individuals who have been arrested by various law enforcement agencies in York County and held until they post bond or are ordered released by a court or transferred to a state institution after court sentencing. The Detention Center also houses inmates for the U.S. Marshal Service and Immigration and Customs Enforcement under an agreement that provides compensation to the county. The York County Detention Center is committed to the operation of a facility that will meet state standards and for the preservation of basic human rights of the inmate population by the Constitution of the United States of America.

We invite you to apply to join our team as a full-time, non-exempt Registered Nurse within the York County Sheriff’s Office Detention division. The purpose of this position is to provide basic, extended, and emergency/first aid medical care of County Detention Center inmates and staff; to document all procedures and treatment performed with accuracy and completeness. The facility nurse will supervise medication distribution and address all medication related questions and issues, will address and respond to all inmate requests, problems, and complaints according to the medical protocols, perform physicals and screenings on recently booked inmates every 14 days, review medical history of all inmates, coordinate care of inmates to other medical facilities when needed, contact family when necessary, and collaborate closely with the facility doctor, dentist, mental health, and pharmacy professionals.Full Salary Range: Pay Grade 119; $29.40 - $45.56 per hour. Salary is determined based on experience and/or education. Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm (40 hours per week), occasional weekend and evening work required.Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
  • Assists physician with exams as necessary for sick call, doctor call, dental call, and mental health call; performs general nursing duties, including administering medications, collecting blood/urine/other body samples for laboratory analysis, checking vital signs, reviewing and receiving all inmate’s medical histories, and performing patient education on health maintenance.
  • Retrieves, prepares, and participates in the distribution of medications to inmates; instructs inmates in medication use, side effects, and proper dosage in collaboration with pharmacist.
  • Performs general administrative and clerical work as required including: attending facility meetings; performing medical related training to staff; attending medical classes and training for facility and nursing license maintenance; preparing and updating reports and forms; entering and retrieving all medical related data; copying and filing documents; answering and returning phone calls; and scheduling and maintaining medical appointments.
  • Receives, reviews, and responds to all medical complaints of inmates; recommends and implements a plan of care; follows medical protocols and refers to the physician when necessary; and evaluation of care given as needed.
  • Maintains constant awareness of inmates’ medical history, mental state, location, and behavior; takes necessary precautions to guard the security and safety of self, inmates, co-workers, and the general public.
  • Makes arrangements for inmate admission to other medical facilities when needed, and transfers health information. 
  • Files and records various types of records and charts.
  • Administers a variety of routine and emergency medical and first aid treatments for inmates and staff, and refers medical treatment to outside facility when needed.
  • Attends facility and medical training, meetings, and seminars as necessary to enhance job knowledge and skills. Recommends, arranges, and implements medical training as needed to staff.
  • Operates a computer and basic office equipment; operates nursing/medical instruments, laboratory instruments, and supplies; exercises care, safety, and maintenance in the use of all equipment.

Experience and Education:

  • Associate’s Degree or Vocational/Technical Degree in Nursing.
  • Three (3) years of nursing experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Certifications and Licenses:
  • Valid driver’s license is preferred.
  • Must possess State of South Carolina or multi-state Nursing License, First Aid/CPR/AED, and Pharmacy Technician certifications.
  • May require additional professional or technical certifications as deemed necessary by management.
Physical Demands: 
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
