Job Description
This position is responsible for roadway maintenance, snow & ice control, and leaf collection. Work involves street sweeping, pavement repairs, operating heavy equipment, snow plowing and hauling snow. Work also includes pothole patching, crack filling, bridge maintenance, responding to various emergency requests including water main breaks, emergency barricading, storm damage and performing daily equipment maintenance. Work is performed under moderate supervision of the Operations management team and is subject to review to insure proper work performance.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
•Operates a large variety of equipment, including all classes of street sweepers, dump trucks, loaders, backhoe, skid steer, patch machines, crack filler, garbage trucks, flushers, snow plows with wing, Vac trucks, utility tractors and performs associated work tasks.
•Performs maintenance and repairs of all City streets and utilities.
•Repairs water main breaks.
•Responds to storm damage issues, including downed trees and flooding.
•Operates graders and loaders during snow removal and ice cutting operations.
•Operates leaf collection, street sweeping and flushing equipment.
•Informs home owners and businesses of concerns; takes and acts upon comments or complaints from public.
•Plows and hauls snow.
•Salts streets and sidewalks.
•Performs street patching and repairing.
•Grinds brush and yard waste material.
•Responds to emergency barricading requests and street closures.
•Hauls gravel, leaves, snow sand, etc. to and from work site or designated area.
•Maintains regular punctual and predictable attendance, works other shifts, overtime and extra hours as required.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
•Operates as an inspector when necessary.
•Performs miscellaneous painting, sand blasting and other maintenance tasks.
•Performs minor equipment maintenance, cleaning and repair.
•Leads, guides and trains other team members.
•Assists other divisions and performs all duties of Operator, Operator I & II.
Typical Qualifications
Requires experience in street maintenance, utility repairs and operation of heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the following knowledge, abilities, and skills:
•Considerable knowledge of the operation of vehicles and heavy equipment.
•Knowledge in the excavation, forming and finishing work necessary in the construction of concrete formations.
•Thorough knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely in and around vehicular traffic.
•Knowledge of pipe laying and plumbing techniques.
•Knowledge in the types and uses of common hand tools.
•Ability to maintain and prepare accurate records and reports.
•Ability to lift and operate equipment weighing up to 100 pounds.
•Ability to decipher plat maps, paving plans and execute correct measures for accurate installations and record keeping.
•Skill in the operation of computer equipment, including GIS and Microsoft applications.
•Ability to read and understand street maps and directions.
•Ability to perform minor equipment repairs.
•Ability to understand and carry out oral and/or written instructions.
•Ability to work and make decisions under limited supervision.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public, and to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
•Ability to withstand a variety of temperatures.
•Ability to read and interpret plans.
•Ability to perform tasks on a regular basis, which require frequent standing, climbing, lifting, reaching, bending, squatting and carrying.
•Ability to properly barricade work sites in accordance with the City of Appleton Temporary Traffic Control (TTC) Manual and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards.
•Ability to wear a respirator.
•Required to respond for emergency operations.
•Schedule is four 10-hour days, year-round, 09:00PM - 7:00AM with flexibility in the summer to work 2:00AM -12:00PM.
•Possess and maintain a valid Wisconsin Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the N endorsement.
