BACKGROUND:
The BPS Office of Health & Wellness (OHW) aims to actively promote the health and wellness of all students to advance both their healthy development and readiness to learn. The Office of Health and Wellness is an integral part of the division of Academics. The Office of Health and Wellness provides an array of interdisciplinary services and supports to schools in five target areas: comprehensive health education, physical education, physical activity, policy & advocacy, and wellness promotions.
The Office of Health and Wellness leads the district's efforts to improve the quality, increase the quantity, and ensure the equity of comprehensive health education, physical education, and physical activity in schools and create a healthier school environment in which the healthy choice is the easy choice.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Boston Public Schools Office of Health and Wellness seeks a Physical Activity Project Manager. The Physical Activity Project Manager will work closely with the Physical Education Director, as well as other Wellness Directors and Division staff to help schools implement policies, programs, and strategies to integrate physical activity and movement across the school day. The manager will identify and develop physical activity-related programs and promotions for schools, facilitate physical activity-related community partnerships, disseminate materials and resources to schools, provide training and on-site coaching to teachers and staff, monitor implementation of physical activity strategies, recommend school-level physical activity policy options, and evaluate systematic changes. The manager will also act as a support to provide resources on staff wellness.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support schools in integrating physical activity across the school day
Review and assess current programs and strategies for integrating physical activity into the school day
Identify best practices and models for integrated physical activity, kinesthetic learning, movement breaks, and structured recess across all grade levels
Identify and create a resource directory of community and school-based programs that can serve to improve the equity, quality, and quantity of physical activity participation across all school levels
Coordinate integration of community resources into schools
Develop and disseminate appropriate materials, resources, and strategies to support the implementation of policies and physical activity initiatives; maintain and update a web-based physical activity resource directory
Develop and train school-based physical activity wellness champions and other school based staff who will lead and implement physical activity initiatives at the school level
Support schools in assessing the current state of recess using a best-practice rubric; help schools identify appropriate professional development and/or coaching supports to improve the quality of recess (and train school-based recess teams to ensure high quality recess across schools); identify appropriate community partners to provide PD
Provide physical activity and movement-based trainings to teachers and school staff
Assist with student fitness assessments as needed
Collaborate with Wellness Policy & Promotions team regarding physical activity initiatives
Support implementation and monitoring of the BPS Physical Activity Policy and evaluate policy impact on systems and environmental change
Participate as a member of BPS District Wellness Council and Co-chair of the BPS Physical Education and Physical Activity Policy Subcommittee
Assist school wellness councils and wellness champions in the development and adoption of physical activity policies, programs and promotions
Develop materials to communicate the policy and increase awareness of physical activity initiatives, and assist schools with implementing policies and supportive programs
Collaborate with BPS Wellness Policies and Promotions team to communicate and monitor the implementation of the policy
Track school-based physical activity program implementation and progress, as well as collaborations with community partners, and environmental changes within schools
Collaborate with BPS Wellness Policies and Promotions team to review physical activity behavior change data, assess adoption of physical activity policies, and evaluate the impact of policies on sustainable environmental change
Internal and external communication and collaboration
Effectively communicate to school leaders, teachers, staff, and community partners
Support division goals for integrating physical activity strategies into school programs
Provide technical assistance and resources to health and physical educators, classroom teachers, and school staff as needed
Participate on city-wide physical activity collaboratives and task forces as needed
Recruit and engage internal and external stakeholders through the BPS District Wellness Council to inform policy and program implementation
Serve as an active member of the Office of Health and Wellness Team
Other duties as assigned
Identifies Staff Wellness programming to support BPS employee wellness
Develop, identify and disseminate resources to help build the capacity of district departments to integrate movement across the workday.
Identify partnerships and promotion opportunities for BPS staff
Conduct staff team building activities for schools or central office departments
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
Bachelor's degree in public health, health or physical education, exercise science, health promotions, community health or other related field with at least 2-3 years related work experience
Knowledge of physical activity and obesity prevention strategies and interventions
Experience implementing school or community-based physical activity or public health programs, especially within large school districts
Knowledge of policies or policy interventions regarding physical activity in schools
Ability to collaborate with community agencies on the implementation of program and professional development initiatives
Experience training or peer-coaching adults
Strong organizational skills and record-keeping
Self-directed individual with excellent oral and written communication skills
Detail oriented with excellent follow-through
Ability to work in a fast-paced work environment and to operate efficiently within tight time-frames
Ability to develop strong working relationships with co-workers, school staff, and community agencies
Creativity, flexibility and positive attitude
Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment
QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
Master's Degree in public health or a related field
Knowledge of program evaluation
