TEKsystems has a client that is embarking on a significant project to support a large SQL Server consolidation effort. This initiative aims to streamline our database infrastructure, improve performance, reduce costs, and enhance manageability by consolidating multiple SQL Server instances into a more efficient and scalable environment. The SQL DBA will be a key player in this consolidation effort, ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of our databases during and after the transition.
**Responsibilities:**
- **Database Management:**
- Design, install, configure, and maintain SQL Server databases.
- Monitor system performance and identify potential issues.
- Optimize database performance through tuning and query optimization.
- Implement and manage data models, schemas, and objects.
- **Backup and Recovery:**
- Develop and implement backup and recovery strategies.
- Ensure data integrity and availability through regular backups and restoration procedures.
- Perform disaster recovery planning and testing.
- **Security:**
- Implement database security measures to protect sensitive data.
- Manage user access and permissions.
- Monitor for and address security vulnerabilities.
- **Consolidation Effort:**
- Plan and execute the consolidation of multiple SQL Server instances.
- Conduct thorough assessments and audits of current database environments.
- Develop strategies for minimizing downtime and ensuring data integrity during the consolidation process.
- Collaborate with various teams to migrate databases and applications to the new consolidated environment.
- Monitor and optimize the performance of the consolidated SQL Server environment.
- **Collaboration and Support:**
- Work closely with software developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to support the SQL Server consolidation effort.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for database-related issues.
- Document database configurations, policies, and procedures.
**Qualifications:**
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
- Proven experience as a SQL DBA or in a similar role.
- In-depth knowledge of SQL Server databases, including installation, configuration, and maintenance.
- Strong understanding of database performance tuning and optimization.
- Experience with backup, recovery, and disaster recovery planning.
- Knowledge of database security best practices.
- Proficiency in SQL and T-SQL scripting.
- Experience with database consolidation and migration processes.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
**Preferred Qualifications:**
- Experience in the hospitality industry or with property management systems.
- Knowledge of cloud-based database solutions (e.g., Azure SQL, AWS RDS).
- Certification in SQL Server (e.g., Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate).
- **Flexibility:**G Willingness to work a flexible schedule to accommodate production deployments, which may include occasional evening or weekend hours.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:
The client has a mix of on-prem and Azure databases. The core of their initiative is to save money on licensing costs. They've over used Enterprise licenses and also have not previously sized their environment correctly, so in some cases have many databases that can be consolidated onto a single server and in some cases do not need the licensing they currently own due to the size of the database in question. The hours per week would be 40 hrs, but per the note on flexibility they have maintenance windows on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays, so would need some flexibility to work those hours/days, but would give you time back on other days during the week. They don't expect any evening or weekend work to happen for the first 1-2 months as they plan to tackle the non-production environments first.
